Technology plays a crucial role in our modern world, and connectivity is an essential resource for all, particularly for the LGBTQ+ community. Online spaces serve as lifeline for many LGBTQ+ individuals, providing unique access to the community, self-expression, health information, and essential services. Last month, LGBTech released "ctrl+alt+lgbt: Digital Access, Usage, and Experiences of the LGBTQ+ Community". This report, a product of a fruitful collaboration between LGBTech and Data for Progress, presents the findings of a comprehensive survey of 1,304 LGBTQ+ adults (18 and over) nationwide. The report provides insight into how, where, and why LGBTQ+ adults access the internet and use digital and social platforms, and also measures their levels of safety and openness in online spaces. For designers and design researchers who are passionate about building inclusive products and services, reports like these are a good source of information. The strategy aims to promote inclusion, protect rights, and improve the quality of life and wellbeing for all LGBTI+ people. As part of creating the next strategy, the Department wants to gather the views of our community, they want to hear what life is like first-hand. They want to know what is working well, what needs to change or improve if there are any gaps, and what should be prioritised in the strategy. Winston, Gabriella, Torin and John are the founding members of Soben’s Visibility, Inclusivity, Community, and Education (VICE) Committee. As we close out this #Pride Month, they shared their four tips for how to be an ally in the workplace: 1️⃣ Educate yourself - this can be done by either researching via reputable sources online or talking to anyone you might know that’s willing to help you. 2️⃣ Provide a safe space - make sure that LGBT+ people around you know that you support them and provide a space for them to talk if that is something they need. 3️⃣ Active Listening - always make sure to actively listen as LGBT+ people talk to you. This is critical to understanding someone’s perspective. 4️⃣ Speak Up - if you see someone being oppressed in the workplace, you should either reach out to the victim or reach out to HR to report it. Do one this one thing today. Take a little time to ask a colleague what your Allyship would mean to them. The people you most likely interact with every day and give the impression that they are making their way through life as you are. Women, LGBTQ+ community, people with disabilities, different race and ethnicities, social backgrounds and ages etc. etc. It will take 15 minutes. And then listen, really listen. Today is international Allyship day. I don’t generally like labels. If you do the above, you are on your way to Allyship. Label or no label. Your colleague will feel good to have a chance to share why your Allyship matters. You will feel good for having learned something. We will step forward understanding each other far better than we started the day. Imagine what could be achieved if everybody did this. How rich would we all be by the end of the day? #allyship #interntionalallyshipday
