Pyrolysis technology is a thermochemical decomposition process, carried out in the absence of oxygen (or any halogen) at elevated temperatures. It is used to break down complex organic materials into simpler substances. The process is applied to a variety of materials, including biomass, plastic, and other waste materials. Pre-treatment is critical to protect HVO catalysts, increase their lifespan, and avoid operational issues. 𝗣𝗿𝗲-𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 The basic pre-treatment process involves acid degumming followed by dry pre-treatment/bleaching. Additional steps like heat treatment, second bleaching, fatty acid distillation or fat splitting may be required depending on the feedstock quality. Physical refining processes like degumming, adsorption and deacidification are preferred over chemical refining for HVO pre-treatment. 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹 Key steps include removal of phosphorus and trace metals through degumming, washing and adsorption, chloride removal through water washing, polyethylene removal by crystallization and filtration, and fatty acid removal through steam stripping if needed. 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗩𝗢 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 The demand for HVO is increasing due to its advantages as a drop-in renewable diesel fuel with lower emissions. Factors driving HVO growth include higher blending targets, new aviation mandates, technical maturity, good cold properties, and valuable co-products. Mobilizing waste feedstock supply chains and overcoming barriers in novel advanced biofuel technologies are crucial for further scaling up HVO production. Exciting News in Biomass Conversion! Our recent publication in ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering (https://lnkd.in/d5pPP569) reveals a novel method for converting sugarcane bagasse into valuable chemicals and fuels. While conventional strategies focus on glucose and fructose from lignocellulosic biomass, the rigid structure of sugarcane bagasse poses challenges. Our research introduces a novel approach, screening metal salts to convert sugarcane bagasse into levulinic acid. This versatile compound adds economic value to biomass, finding applications in fuel additives, solvents, plasticizers, and pharmaceuticals. Moreover, we utilize the by-product, solid residue, as a Lewis acid catalyst with Rhodium salt, paving the way for synthesizing jet fuel precursors through hydroformylation and hydroxyalkylation/alkylation reactions. This innovative process maximizes sugarcane bagasse utilization in bio-refineries, making significant strides in sustainable biomass conversion. Now available: CertiPUR-US certified 25% biobased foams! CertiPUR-US certified 25% biobased foams meet all of the criteria for our certified foams and in addition have been analyzed by Beta Analytic, Miami-based independent, ISO 17025-accredited laboratory that specializes in biobased testing services. The percentage of biobased content in the foam is based on the internationally recognized ASTM D6866-22 Method B standard which uses an Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (AMS) instrument to measure how much of the carbon within a product is derived from biomass. The result indicates the percentage of the product’s biobased carbon versus fossil-derived carbon.
