🌱 A huge shoutout to LHB's Kim Bretheim and Cause's Molly Eagen for their insightful webinar on August 22! They explored Carleton College’s ambitious zero energy goals and the journey towards achieving them at the Phius Alliance Minnesota event. The conversation shed light on the unique project conditions and in-depth technical analysis that will lead to the successful Passive House design certified new student housing. The construction process and end results have set a new benchmark in sustainable building practices. With 11 new buildings designed to Phius passive house standards, these structures aim to reduce energy consumption by 60-70%. Highlights include Lilac Hill’s Phius Zero and Union Street’s Phius Core designs. Carleton College is truly leading the way in sustainability for higher education! Kudos to all involved for pushing the envelope in sustainable design! 🌿🏠 #engineering #architecture #planning #lhbstories

How are we building (or renovating) the next generation of schools to meet health, resilience and climate targets? Here’s a FREE online symposium designed to offer answers and demonstrate solutions… Sign up below (and share with your local school boards or design decisionmakers.)
The semester might be winding down, but there's never been a better time to learn about how we can support the education of our youth, from preschool to universities. That's why we're thrilled to announce our next event, Academic Performance: A Passive House Schools Symposium. Learn how Passive House educational buildings can help push towards electrification, provide public shelter in extreme weather, create flexible infrastructure to serve the needs of a fast-changing educational environment with presentations from Naomi C.O. Beal from phME-passivhausMAINE, Ann-Marie Fallon from Architype, Richard Lo from Kaplan Thompson Architects, Timothy Lock from OPAL Architecture, and Barry McCarron from South West College. Join us on June 20th from Noon-4:00PM ET for this free online symposium! Dr. Kesik from the Architecture Faculty at University of Toronto researched the benefit of balcony glazing in Canada - "It's an easy choice for a developer as a value add-on," he notes. The results of Ted Kesik's study also display that Lumon balcony enclosures are an effective way of complying with "TGS performance targets" (Toronto Green Standards. Meeting green standards through the use of intelligent building solutions is not only a central topic of discussion in Canada and North America, but also in the EU. The EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive states that "85% of buildings were built before 2000 and amongst those, 75% have poor energy performance." EU Building Directive: https://lnkd.in/d3vJ_D6K In North America and across Europe, our aim is to ease the environmental load of new construction and renovation projects by implementing energy-efficient solutions with a proven track record. As a bonus, city residents enjoy added comfort of living. Part 3: Regarding the generality of the research, I divided the research literature into five categories and examined it. First, I researched the problems on the planet, including the environmental crisis and global warming, the lack of energy and water resources, the increase in population and high-rise buildings, and the identity crisis. Then I studied the problems of the intended city for design in terms of urban context and biological patterns. Next, I paid attention to the approaches formed to solve the environmental crisis and collected information from native and sustainable architecture to zero-carbon buildings. For increasing population and high-rising in the world, I found the formed movements that started from the Chicago school and high-rising in New York and reached the present century. In the end, to add a drop to the sea of science, I got to know the global policies that have been adopted in line with the environmental and energy crisis in high-rise buildings. Results led me to environmental architecture and symbiotic with it, the use of renewable energy, especially solar energy and passive design, creating a vertical city instead of a horizontal one, which means integration of uses and agreeing with the urban hierarchy, and choosing downtowns as a place of building a skyscraper by making signs and legibility. Please join me in supporting my quest for excellence in Architecture. "We're not taking seriously the challenge of climate" Unafraid to call it as she sees it, Professor Susan Roaf of Heriot-Watt University trains her sights on education. "I think it's largely on the education of architects, because architecture wet from being taught in the offices, where they learned from the experience of the last building…to being taught in universities where they were all overwhelmed by the Bauhaus." "A lot of kids have left architecture school not knowing how building work, a fundamental thing…And this is exactly what the system wants, we are held back by the inertia and the business as usual, status quo system" Link to episode: https://lnkd.in/gCPmR32Z (Edited a little for clarity of posting but these are her words, just listen) #climatechange #climateresilience #buildingdesign #architecture #passivehouse #thermalmanagement #ZeroAmbitionsPodcast

We had a sunny and mud-filled day of intensive workshops. The students practiced wattle and daub (applied on a bamboo lattice), hyperadobe and earth-based plasters. This experience is part of our course "Indigenous Technologies Towards Climate Solutions", bringing together Pratt Institute, Pratt Institute MS in Sustainable Environmental Systems, Pratt Historic Preservation and Pratt Urban Placemaking and Management students. The hands-on practice is complemented by lectures, readings and discussions covering the historic evolution and heritage value of these techniques, material characterization, technical aspects pertaining to execution and maintenance, and the importance of building with locally available and completely recyclable, non-toxic materials. We need a paradigm shift in the building materials industry across the globe. Training and inspiring the future generations of architects, conservators, builders and policy makers is a firm step towards this much needed change. #sustainablearchitecture #historicpreservation #constructionindustry #buildingmaterials #healthybuildings #biophilicdesign #architecture #buildingconservation

𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼-𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 The study explores the potential of buildings in mitigating heat in cities, focusing on energy use, passive survivability, and heat rejection. The research found that smaller carbon footprint buildings emit less heat and have better passive survivability. However, potential trade-offs exist, such as inadequate ventilation. The study suggests that building regulations should consider passive survivability and thermal interactions with urban climate. Source: Elsevier Authors: Holly W.
