Working my butt off (Quite literally) I've been thinking a lot lately about the different paths we take in our careers, especially when it comes to creativity. Both of my parents are in creative fields: my mom works her magic as a beautician, while my dad's all about crafting beautiful furniture for homes and offices. But here's the thing: while I'm totally into the creative scene too, I see myself thriving in a different kind of environment. Unlike my parents, who are out there hustling all day long, running around to meet clients and manage supplies, I'm more drawn to a modern, cozy workspace. So, as I was diving into "The Minimalist" recently, I had this lightbulb moment: why not create an illustration to show how different our worlds really are? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this! I attended office hours for Goodby Silverstein & Partners earlier this month. Here's what I learned about portfolios. 1) Portfolio schools are important to big agencies. (Good luck trying to work at an agency without one). I'm joking, but at the moment, that's what I was thinking. At the end of the day, work speaks for itself. It might take longer to learn everything, but it doesn't mean it's impossible! 2) Don't send companies your complete portfolio. This should've been more obvious, but in my head, I thought the more, the merrier. Now, I understand people don't have time to click through 20 pieces of work. Instead, carefully select the pieces that you're most proud of and showcase your skills. For those who work in creative industries, what else should creatives know about crafting their portfolio?

This photo was taken 9 years ago. It was my first brand shoot after leaving my day job to fully go into my evening job, so understand I was testing the waters with my personal brand. My intention was to show off my personality - not too formal, not too casual, just the perfect blend. I didn’t know where this chapter of business would take me, let alone the journey of highs and lows. I was ambitious and ready to take on anything! So much has changed since then. Back then, I envisioned a big office with many creative minds working alongside me, co-creating work that leaves an impact. And even though, 9 years later, the vision for impactful work hasn’t changed, the desire for a massive office, big accolades, or lofty titles has shifted. I don’t need to win awards, but if they happen, that’s great. I don’t want a big office, but I do embrace collaborating with creative minds. I don’t seek big titles, but I love working with brands where I can provide value that goes beyond the scope of work, making a true difference. I sit back and reflect on the amazing brands I get to work with, and the people within these companies who pour their heart and soul into what they do. As much as the young woman from 9 years ago envisioned working with such brands, I still pinch myself when I think about the beautiful opportunities I’ve been afforded. One thing's for sure: I never take any of it for granted. 9 years later, and my passion hasn’t faded. I love what I do. In fact, every day I love it more and more as I see myself stepping into a bigger purpose. And that, for me, is so much more than the titles, awards, or recognition.
