FYI, #Toronto & #Ontario LIF especially, all #Torontonians, #Ontarians, too, please sign & share widely! "'SAVE THE SCIENCE CENTRE' 'Therefore we, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to enact the following measures: (1) Immediately invest in repairing the current Ontario Science facility where it is currently located (2) Hold and respect community consultations about the Ontario Science Centre's future Will you sign? -- Whereas, the Conservatives' their ‘business case’ that shows the one-time cost of relocating the Ontario Science Centre to Ontario Place would be twice the cost of completing the necessary repairs at the current site. -- Whereas, moving the Science Centre will take a vital public institution away from Flemingdon Park and Thorncliffe Park simply to justify Ford's vanity mega-spa project. -- Whereas, communities have not been consulted about Ford's half-baked scheme. -- Wheras, the business case assumed that the new, half-sized Science Centre would be built on top of a new, publicly funded parking structure located next to the proposed Therme spa. The costs of the parking structure (which has been estimated at over $500 million) were excluded from the business case. -- Whereas, the Conservatives’ ‘business case’ has been called 'all spin,' 'bunk,' 'torqued and twisted to serve the government’s desired result,' and has been identified as having 'clear problems with the province’s math.'" -- Kristyn Wong-Tam, #TorontoCentre #NDP #MPP #TOpoli #GTHApoli #onpoli #cdnpoli #globalimpact

More neglect to what we have, what makes us unique and near and dear to so many Ontarians/Torontonians for changes no one asked for or wanted. Instead of investing in what we have and prolonging the life when and where possible the Government is simply focused on expanding and development. How could we ever manage an even larger more expansive list of municipalities if we can't even provide for the ones we already have? There is no good reason to destroy and relocate this historic building. "Despite very real financial challenges, renovation of the current building is both more environmentally and socially responsible and considerably cheaper than building the proposed new, smaller facility at Ontario Place." "The Ontario Science Centre is unique among cultural attractions globally, being located in the heart of a growing, youthful, and diverse community. The resulting relationship has strengthened both the Centre and the communities of Flemingdon Park and Thorncliffe Park. These communities deserve better. In its new location, the Centre will be a kilometer or more from any community. The government is planning to destroy one of the world’s best science museums and an Ontario icon. If you google “Top Ten science museums in the world”, the OSC will appear in this list." I have many happy memories of going there on school trips, my first day with my now wife, etc... This is a place for so many to learn about the incredible and priceless world of science and to learn and ask questions. No wonder they want it removed... more shameful and despicable behaviour from the sick and twisted. Please use your voice, silence is so empowering. https://lnkd.in/gf3bpdKy

When planners or other professional age out of the work force, there is rarely a compilation of the reflections of their practice -- a loss of institutional knowledge. It is made worse when we realize the sunk cost to train that person who is leaving, and the cost to train the new person. This is a massive loss to the communities and/or organizations we serve. In my little park world, to address this, I created a FREE parks and urban planning vlog called "Parks Are Like Icebergs" on Substack. This vlog shares 4 decades long (and counting) perspectives on urban planning, parks planning and recreation and leisure services, informed by my recently completed Phd in parks decision-making. I recently updated the anthology of my posts, shown on the front page of my substack site. In addition, on a consulting basis, I can offer a service where we together develop a process where we document the high level reflections and learnings of your valued colleagues before they walk out the door -- knowledge transfer at its most extreme. What those departing staff experienced and practiced may or may not be as applicable today, but rest assured, they have something you should hear! Have a great spring! I would love if you would contact me, and/or subscribe to my free vlog. #parksandrecreation #parks #urbanplanning #history #culture #humanresources #canada #alberta #peoplemanagement #ecology #social #placemaking #economic https://lnkd.in/ePJ4mxHq
