Let's get this straight - - In this era of zero trust, the leading cyber security company Crowdstrike sent an update to (its Falcon sensor agent) another IT leader Microsoft which caused a BSOD issue (Blue screen of death which was apparently caused by a null pointer). What an oxymoron! - This was not a cyberattack and affected only certain OS ( Windows, not linux or mac) and certain currencies of these OS - Window xxx ( not all) - The fallout was unforeseen and unthinkable, across the globe. - I have seen several different approaches and solutions being promoted by vendors, analysts, and security wannabes, touting how they have a silver bullet that could have prevented this issue. - Intuitively thinking this is at best preposterous - Cybersecurity cannot be trusted with a select few companies and no one solution fits all protection - There need to be layers of security because the attack surfaces are layered - We all would agree that data analytics (AI/ML/GenAI whatever approach you take) has always been the north star for cybersecurity and has a lifecycle of descriptive, predictive, prescriptive, and finally cognitive phases. - A simple approach for businesses at a bare minimum would be to adopt the descriptive phase where you have visibility and analytics around your attack surface ( assets) - Remember you cannot protect what you cannot see! - We at CloudFabrix call this Asset Analytics, where we employ a real-time agentless discovery for your entire stack which provides a topology discovery, dependency, and impact mapping, lifecycle analytics ( what currency), capacity utilization in an automated manner. - This clearly would have not prevented the debacle, but would have provided proactive planning where IT teams could have identified aging, important and risky assets and put together a mitigation plan. Hoping we can play a squirrel's but important role in taking the 1st proactive step in preventing this again with Descriptive analytics!

If you keep track of current events, I am sure you heard that there was a major technology incident, glitch, SNAFU, or whatever you want to call it. CrowdStrike is one of the leading cyber companies in the world released an update that that unintentionally disrupted Microsoft customers worldwide. Numerous endpoints and servers have experienced functional issues as a result of this update, potentially creating operational difficulties. Luckily, none of our clients were impacted but we stand ready execute incident response that you have come to expect. It would be easy to pile on to CrowdStrike at the moment, but it is the times we live in. IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN TO SOMEONE ELSE. Earlier this week it was Spectrum customers in Texas, a few months ago Verizon, and with Microsoft, it’s any given patch Tuesday. So, who’s next? When things like this happen, we stand with our clients to get them back up and running to reduce downtime. Whenever disaster or incidents occur, and they will, we are here to help. #cybersecurity #incidentresponse #whoyougonnacall #CMITSolutions #SANW #sanantonio #wegotyourback

# When Software Fails, It's Everyone's Problem The recent CrowdStrike incident, which caused a global tech outage, is a stark reminder: Software failures have far-reaching consequences in our interconnected world. The US Homeland Security subcommittee heard yesterday from CrowdStrike's CEO. It discovered a single faulty update led to widespread disruptions, affecting airlines, emergency services, and hospitals. The incident highlights our increasing dependence on a handful of large tech companies. And it raises questions about accountability, testing processes, and the role of AI in software updates. At Agilebase, we believe this incident underscores the critical need for: 1. Rigorous testing protocols 2. Transparent communication during crises 3. Collaborative industry efforts to prevent cascading failures 4. Ongoing discussions about tech dependency and risk mitigation As we push the boundaries of innovation, we must forget our shared responsibility to maintain robust, reliable systems that society depends on. https://lnkd.in/e3cRDrss #SoftwareReliability #TechAccountability #CyberSecurity #AgilebaseInsights

This incident raises many questions about cyber-security, and readily accepting security software as gold standards, not to mention accepting every automatic update. Wonder which is worse, the security software or the malware it's supposed to protect against? This illustrates the conundrum on a grand scale, a case of greed and a desire for speed, with a scant understanding of all that the guys and gals who work in the trenches do to keep systems up and running. What is your take?

CEO, CUMMISKEY STRATEGIC SOLUTIONS, LLC - former DHS Under Secretary & Chief Acquisition Officer, State Senator, State CIO, Board Member, Cybersecurity Expert, Senior Advisor to Government & Private Sector Companies
Chris Cummiskey goes in-depth with Business Insider reporter Tim Paradis to cover some of the top issues surrounding the CrowdStrike global #IT incident: According to Chris Cummiskey, CEO of Cummiskey Strategic Solutions and a former official with the US Department of Homeland Security who oversaw the agency's IT functions, the problem of hydra-headed IT disruptions will likely worsen as technology works its way deeper into our lives. Cummiskey said part of what's surprising about this latest disturbance is that CrowdStrike is seen as a "gold standard" in the cybersecurity community. The fact that this happened with a company of that caliber is a reminder that a lot can go wrong and that there's no easy fix, he said. "Even the best are going to falter at times," Cummiskey said. "And when it's combined with the Microsoft platform, which it was in this instance, that's really going to amplify the disruptions that you're seeing." He said most of the time when these mistakes occur, the public doesn't really feel it. But that's starting to change as the world becomes more interconnected. "You're starting to see more instances where a mistake happens, it cascades, and then all of a sudden, the public is going to feel it, whether it's a canceled medical procedure or their flight stuck on the tarmac," Cummiskey said. #cybersecurity #infrastructuresecurity #incidentresponse #BusinessInsider

Calculating return on investment for security products is notoriously hard. Xage Security did a spectacular job not only building a simple but accurate calculation that anyone can use, they proved it out with real customers. For anyone who isn't sure about #ZeroTrust yet, this is as compelling of an argument as you are going to find that Zero Trust Access pays for itself, fast. The numbers don't lie: - One customer saved over $1 million a year in OT support costs by leveraging just-in-time secure remote access - One customer got complete return on investment in 3 months. Get the report here and try the calculation for yourself.
