1.4m premises now have access to Virgin Media Ireland's superfast broadband. Tony Hanway, CEO of Virgin Media Ireland, said: “This announcement with NBI brings our ultrafast broadband and TV services to even more premises across Ireland, enabling homes, businesses, communities and regions nationwide to further prosper and grow.” Read more: https://bit.ly/45tdHOq

Lengthy article but an interesting read for those of us who spent many years in the world of triple play telco. As TV video services have fragmented and gone direct to consumers over IP there is an argument now that it has swung as far as it can and there could be value in bundling those services like an old world PayTV offer into one prop - the consumer gets more for their money and the video providers get lower churn and consistent revenue. The telcos being theoretically well placed to offer this with their extensive customer service, billing and support etc. We are starting to see incremental moves in Australia with the likes of Optus SubHub. I could also see platforms like Amazon or Apple that could readily wrap up a bundled subscription concept though too, with simple billing etc. Is the pendulum about to swing back?<!>

Rate increases vary, as always, by region. But Bloomberg is reporting a broad 3% spike for both internet and video products.

What a wonderful and historic morning for TV licensees in the US!! The 5G wireless broadcast proof of concept over TV a license in Boston was a success this morning! Thank you Frank Copsidas, #WWOO-TV Boston, and the #LPTVBA for your awesome contribution to the next-gen TV ecosystem. Giving many thousands of TV licenses in the US a new competitive transmission option for next-gen deployment is a wonderful thing. With Qualcomm, the largest innovator and manufacturer of wireless modems, and other world class tech outfits backing this 5G broadcast ecosystem and an army of TV licenses that cover ~225,000,000 US citizens sky is the limit! The current dominant ATSC 3.0 next-gen standard is utilized by major affiliated station groups and a small group operators alike in the US. Now ATSC 3.0 has competition and as we all know innovation and competition are the great equalizers. From a commerce perspective - this timely entrance of the 5G standard of broadcast distribution could disrupt ATSC 3.0 consortium that have been gatekeeping 2,000+ TV licensees in the US from meaningful participation in their trade groups and shared lighthouse deployments in many TV markets for the last several years. Our owned and operated stations are using ATSC 1.0 at this time but we have built ATSC 3.0 into each one. When it serves our audiences we will definitely pick a lane and deploy. What a time to be an operator! Wishlist for this tech - I would love to see data casting that would bring TV, broadband internet, and emergency alerts to undeserved and/or overran cellular networks is the US via 5G TV licenses. #LPTV #atsc3 #5g

#EchoStar Corporation announced on Tuesday it has completed its acquisition of #DISHNetwork Corporation, which combines DISH's satellite technology, streaming services and nationwide 5G network with EchoStar's satellite communications solutions. The deal, which reunites Charlie Ergen’s satellite empire, is key to Ergen’s plan to transition Dish away from the dwindling pay-TV business and toward wireless services, challenging providers such as Verizon Communications, AT&T, and T-Mobile, Bloomberg reported. Dish will now have access to more cash and time to expand its 5G network buildout and mobile and broadband offerings, including fixed home wireless and Boost Infinite, a low-cost mobile service, the media outlet noted. DISH Network's 5G wireless network now covers more than 70% of the US population, according to the company. EchoStar was previously owned by Dish and spun off in 2008. Key findings from Point Topic's UK TV and Broadband Services Quarterly Research: - 47.2% of survey respondents were on a ‘perceived’ FTTP broadband connection up from 42.8% in the previous quarter; - Technology jargon still proving elusive for consumers with 26.1% of respondents not knowing which type of broadband access technology they were using; - BT, Virgin Media, and Sky still dominate the marketplace, but ‘Other’[2] full fibre ISPs are gaining ground with a 12.2% share in Q4, up from 7.3% y-o-y. Take-up of a TV/video and broadband bundled service was down from 39.1% in the previous quarter, but showed an improvement from 34.3% y-o-y, but it still holds sway with consumers when looking to change providers; - Virgin remained the most popular ISP amongst survey participants throughout the year with 38.6% of respondents in Q4 taking what they believe to be an FTTP-supplied bundled service; - 25 – 100 Mbps speed tier packages regardless of via FTTP or non-FTTP connection remained the most popular for both standalone or bundled services. https://lnkd.in/dmENe6cG #tv #tvbundles #broadband

This is no surprise because people are finding better alternatives out there for both TV and internet. Consumers cannot stand the "sucker sale" tactics that both Comcast and Spectrum use. They get consumers in a low prices and then jack them up at the end of the term. Then the forever waiting game for to renegotiate the pricing. Along with these gimmicks, another sore point are the mounting fees that seem to annually increase. What's happening? Consumers are finding better options with fiber and wireless services like T-Mobile's Home Internet and signing up for entertainment services they want. https://lnkd.in/gt_rYauU

Caveat Emptor. As a consumer who needs high speed internet, you truly get what you pay for. Fixed wireless access services just cannot service needs of 4k streaming and as 5G expands, access will have even less capacity. #effectvemp #comcast
