📢📱 Virgin Media O2 has announced plans to switch off 3G services by 2025, as part of its ongoing network transformation. This move will allow the company to focus on upgrading its 4G and 5G networks, providing faster, more reliable, and energy-efficient services for customers. The switch-off will be carried out in phases across the UK, with the full transition expected to be completed by the end of 2025. This follows the joint statement by the Government and industry in December 2021 that all UK mobile network operators will switch off 2G and 3G by 2033. 📉 The use of 3G has significantly decreased over the years, carrying less than 4% of all data used on Virgin Media O2’s network last year. 🌍 The switch-off will also contribute to the company’s sustainability goals, as 4G and 5G are significantly more energy-efficient compared to 3G. Vodafone UK wastes few opportunities to remind regulators about the potential benefits of its proposed merger with rival mobile operator Three UK. In its latest attempt to illustrate that one big operator is better than two smaller ones, the operator has produced research to underline the economic gains of a faster deployment of 5G standalone (SA) networks. In a statement, Ahmed Essam Shelbaya, CEO of Vodafone UK, said the proposed combination with Three UK “will mean we have the scale to accelerate investment to bring benefits to businesses and consumers sooner rather than later. Today we announce Virgin Media O2’s financial results for Q1 2024.   Positively, we improved mobile and consumer fixed service revenue growth, although the tough macroeconomic backdrop has impacted low-margin mobile handset revenue.   Through our sustained investments we continue to evolve our fixed and mobile networks, growing our fibre footprint at pace via the nexfibre network and our Fibre Upgrade programme, while also launching next generation 5G Standalone in 14 UK cities.   We remain on track to hit our full year 2024 guidance, and for the remainder of the year we will maintain focus on our strategy of targeted investment in future growth drivers.
