In Europe, AI regulation not only protects consumers but also empowers businesses to adopt the technology within a clear and secure framework, enabling innovation to flourish beyond just the major players. This was the key takeaway from our panel event held this week at The Nine, Brussels. Moderated by Javier Espinoza from the Financial Times, panelists included Nirali Patel, VP AI and Data Strategy at Liberty Global, Ansgar Koene, Global AI Ethics and Regulatory Leader at EY, and Hungarian MEP Katalin Cseh from ReNew Europe. They provided invaluable insights into the diverse challenges and opportunities in AI, from #regulation and #ethics to #innovation and #sustainability. Key discussion points included: 💡 AI and Copyright: If AI mimics your voice, who owns the resulting audio? Is it you, the creator of the soundbite, or the AI system? The AI Act aims to navigate these issues, ensuring clear guidelines and protections for all parties involved in AI-generated works, but frameworks are still evolving. 💡 Sustainability and Smaller Language Models (SLMs): Smaller models require less computational power and resources, leading to lower energy consumption and carbon footprints. By optimizing data processing and storage, SLMs can support environmentally-friendly AI practices. 💡 Human Bias in AI: The EU AI Act emphasizes the importance of mitigating human biases in AI systems and advocates for built-in bias detection and correction mechanisms, ensuring that AI applications are fair, transparent, and aligned with ethical standards. It was an insightful afternoon filled with rich discussions and forward-thinking perspectives. Read our ‘Wired for AI’ report here: https://bit.ly/3W96lwf
