The secret to getting the best out of your engineers. Too many businesses miss out on this simple benefit. If you aren’t offering this, you might want to rethink. I speak to engineers all the time who are asking for a role with a bonus. They see it as non-negotiable for any new role. Having a bonus spurs them on and motivates them to work for something. They have a reason to go the extra mile, because they’re getting out of it what they’re putting into it. Bonuses are high in demand but are rare to see on the job boards. So if you’re struggling to hire right now and aren’t getting the high level of engineer you’re wanting – consider offering a bonus if you can. It could save you months in hiring efforts! A $200K Engineering Manager gets a message from a company who wants to interview him. The base salary of the role is $150K. He responds that he’s not interested but appreciates them reaching out. 2 days later, same recruiter leaves a voicemail. He doesn’t respond. Next day, I shit you not, he gets another message. “We really want to speak with you, please let me know when you can chat for 15 minutes.” He sends a message….this position is $50K less than my current salary. Your position requires 8 years of experience, I have 20. While I appreciate your tenacity, I’m in a new role (less than 6 months), and I’m happy here.” His history, education and years of experience are CLEARLY on his profile. The next day, he gets ANOTHER phone call. He actually chuckles when he picks up. “Why are you calling me again? I’ve stated now twice that I’m not interested in this job.” “We think you are the perfect fit for this role. The company XYZ, is willing to negotiate salary for the right fit.” He busts out laughing. The company was his previous employer. He left because he had received no raise for 2 years. They repackaged his old senior level job into a mid level management role with ‘room for growth.” This guy, a client of ours from last year, calls me to tell me this story. After we had a good laugh, I said “this is a perfect example of why hiring is an absolute mess.” It’s getting desperate and dumb out there folks…
