Transferable skills are a superpower. You pick them up as you go and take them along with you to every job. But, unlike your technical know-how that has clear origins, do you really stop and reflect on when, where and how you became efficient or confident? The thing with transferable skills is that they really up your game. They don't seem terribly sexy though. Not on the surface. So I feel like we forget to give them any real credit beyond saying we can do something that's on a JD. I find myself reflecting on and talking about my transferable skills, more and more. And as I think about them, I have come to the conclusion that they are sexy. I mean would I really be a successful professional if I wasn't the sum of all these parts? It takes sharp managers to identify this kind of potential in a person and push them to excel at the not-so-sexy-work. It also takes some soul searching to fully appreciate that what's going on your CV took root somewhere in your career. And the people that helped shape your professional persona really knew what they were doing. Zoe Brandt who in my first ever job pushed me to do things for myself - website backends, managing a CRM, publishing weekly blogs. I still remember she told me I absorb information like a sponge - I used it for interviews for years. Natalie Whitty who gave me the confidence to speak up. I remember she once asked me why I was so quiet in meetings. When she discovered it was because I was embarrassed that everyone shuts up when I speak (I thought I was saying something stupid)… She told me it was because I make people think. Shreyasi Singh who pushed me to drive projects because I am good at ops; even though it really wasn't the most fun part of my job. These days, I'll shamelessly brag about my project management skills. Kimberley Hart (nee Sum) who empowered me to identify, hire, lead and nurture a team who to this day, I am so grateful to have found. Everytime I update my CV or LinkedIn profile or talk about why someone should work with me, beyond degrees and qualifications, I have no choice but to remember these turning points in my career. It's a good feeling that I consciously try to pay forward. #transferableskills #personaldevelopment #professionaldevelopment #leadership #empowerment #upskill

🌟 Skill Set Spotlight: Hard Skills vs. Soft Skills 🧰🤝 As you embark on your career journey, it's essential to understand the distinction between hard skills and soft skills, and how they complement each other in the workplace. Hard skills, often tangible and quantifiable, refer to specific technical abilities and expertise relevant to your field. These might include proficiency in programming languages, data analysis, or project management tools. While hard skills are crucial for performing specific tasks, they are only part of the equation. On the other hand, soft skills, often referred to as interpersonal or people skills, are less tangible but equally essential. These encompass traits like communication, leadership, adaptability, and emotional intelligence. Soft skills are what enable you to effectively collaborate with colleagues, navigate challenges, and lead teams to success. While hard skills may land you the job, it's often your soft skills that determine your success and longevity in a role. Employers increasingly recognize the value of candidates who possess a balance of both hard and soft skills, as they contribute to a positive work environment, effective teamwork, and overall organizational success. So as you develop your skill set, remember to invest in both your hard and soft skills. By doing so, you'll not only excel in your current role but also future-proof your career for whatever challenges lie ahead. 💼✨ #hiring #careergrowthtips #hiringagency #studentsupport
