Bill Would Require Some Employers to Auto-Enroll Workers in Retirement Plans Automatic IRA Act is introduced in Congress. The Automatic IRA Act of 2024, introduced by Rep. Richard Neal, aims to enhance retirement security for millions of U.S. workers by mandating employers with more than 10 employees, but without retirement plans, to automatically enroll their employees in individual retirement accounts (IRAs) or similar automatic-contribution arrangements like 401(k) plans. The bill, building upon previous initiatives like the SECURE Act 2.0, targets plan years beginning after 2026. It seeks to bolster retirement coverage for various worker categories, including gig workers and independent contractors, while also supporting and expanding existing state-facilitated automatic IRA programs. The proposed legislation includes provisions for a new tax credit for qualifying employers and outlines specific contribution requirements for automatic contribution plans, with gradual increases up to a 10% contribution rate. The legislation features exceptions for certain businesses and workers, such as those already offering qualified plans, newly established companies, or employees enrolled in state-sponsored plans. It allows workers the flexibility to opt out or withdraw from participation after enrollment. Moreover, the bill outlines detailed contribution structures for different retirement plans, including minimum default contributions and options for participants to receive lifetime income from their vested account balances. Industry support for the bill has been significant, with organizations like the American Retirement Association and the Insured Retirement Institute endorsing it as a means to expand retirement coverage, improve financial security, and support sustainable income throughout retirement years for American workers and retirees. https://lnkd.in/gMKZjprr
