You wanna hide apps from your iPhone home screen, do you? First of all, there are plenty of reasons to make an iPhone app more difficult to access, and many of them are perfectly wholesome. Perhaps you want to hide your Venmo/Cash App so it’s not easily accessible on your home screen. Or maybe you want to hide your Instagram, TikTok, etc. if you have a little sibling who likes to steal your phone and post embarrassing pics and videos of you on your socials. SEE ALSO: How to mirror your iPhone to your TV So now that you know we’re not here to judge, here’s how to do it: Step 1: Find the app you want to remove from your home screen. Step 2: Tap and hold the app until a menu pops up with the option to “Remove App”. You can also tap and hold the home screen until the apps start shaking, and then tap the little “minus” sign next to the app you want to hide. App mini menu. You’ll see options to either delete the app, remove it from the home screen, or cancel the action. Step 4: Choose “Remove from Home Screen”. The app will be hidden and won’t appear on your home screen. Tap “Remove from Home Screen” Credit: Andy Moser / Apple Cool! But now…how do you find it again? The app, though hidden from your home screen, is still in your app library. Check out our piece on how to find hidden apps. Whether you use an iPhone or a Mac (or both), there never seems to be a shortage of high-quality apps made by independent developers. These indie apps often cater to a niche that may serve you really well, but not be worth the effort for bigger companies to explore. Every few months, these developers band together and put their apps on sale. We’ve previously covered Indie App Sales during Black Friday and now the sale is back with discounts on nearly 300 apps. When you’re checking out apps made by smaller developers, it’s a good idea to see how the developer uses your data. For example, I went through the privacy nutrition labels on the App Store pages of all these apps and found that they collect very basic diagnostics and usage data, and in some cases, personal data such as your email address to maintain your account with the service. (The amount of data collected in these apps is far less than what apps such as Instagram collect, for example.) Not every indie app is worth downloading, but the ones I’ve picked respect your privacy, are interesting enough to try at least once, and have a great sale price. Track TV shows and movies Film Noir allows you to keep a tab on the TV shows and movies you like. You can log content you’ve already watched and the app has great sorting options to help you find something to watch next. It organizes shows in neat sections that helps you keep an eye on upcoming episodes, shows that have concluded, or movies that are trending. You can use this to get an alert when new episodes of your favorite show are out, and use the JustWatch integration to find out where to watch content you like. You can use a Trakt.tv account to sync this data across devices. Film Noir’s usual price is $12.99/year or $29.99 for a lifetime plan. Discount: 50% off on the lifetime in-app purchase or 40% off on the annual plan Duration: March 12-13 Get it here: Film Noir (iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision Pro) Clean up duplicate photos If it’s time to clear the clutter in your library, you could consider using Photoscope. This app checks your library for duplicate photos, including multiple shots of the same scene, and lets you delete the unwanted ones quickly. The app groups similar looking photos for you and it will also pick what it finds the best among these shots. Normally, it costs $0.99. Discount: Free Duration: March 9-20 Get it here: Photoscope (iPhone, Apple Vision Pro) Find the best servers on Mastodon When you’re joining a decentralized social network such as Mastodon, it’s important to select the right server for your needs. Mastowatch lets you check details on any Mastodon server, such as blocked domains, the rules, trending posts, supported languages and upload types, along with other information. It’s a free download with a one-time in-app purchase to unlock all features. Discount: Unlock all features for $0.99 Duration: March 10-14 Get it here: Mastowatch (iPhone, iPad, Mac) Quickly copy text

After a bit of digital overwhelm, been trying a minimalist text based launcher on my phone for a bit of a detox. It's been great! The image is below is from a screenshot of my home screen using Olauncher (which is free btw). Other than the eight app names chosen, everything else you have to search for. It doesn't take long to search, but without the tempting shiny app icons enticing me in, screen time has gone waaay down. And Nic's zen feelings have gone way up! Also making use of Android's built in (but hidden by default?!) 'Digital Wellbeing' app, where you can limit time on specific apps e.g. Instagram has been limited to 10mins a day. How's your digital life? If you sometimes get the overwhelm, what are you using to reduce it? #DigitalOverwhelm #DigitalDetox #Olauncher #Android #Smartphone #DigitalWellbeing

📱 ➡ ⬜ This is the home screen of my iPhone. And yes, you're seeing the photo correctly. I have 0 apps on my home screen. This means that, every time I open my phone, there are 0 angry red notification bubbles begging me for attention. 🔎 To open an app, I simply swipe down and search for a specific app. And I don't have many apps. Most smartphone apps are designed to maximize the time we spend using them. So, I have a rule for my phone: If I compulsively open & waste time on an app, it gets deleted immediately. This means no social media apps, no news, no shopping apps, no games, and even no email. If I want to access any of these things, I have to open my laptop. My relationship with my phone still isn't perfect, but this trick has drastically reduced my screen time & helped me be present wherever I'm at. Are you brave enough to give it a try? ------ (Shoutout to Paxton Hansen for doing this first & encouraging me to try it!) #digitalwellness

The digital wellbeing app on Android (I imagine there is a similar app on the iPhone) is extremely useful. I have added it to my home screen and funnily enough, it is the app I most compulsively check on my phone. Before I added it to my homescreen, my screen time was about 3 hours a day. Now, it's about 45 minutes (not including Google Maps). Merely the act of tracking my screen usage has caused it to collapse. No one wants to die having spent 20% of their waking life on their phone, but most apps are built to be addictive. (Somehow, 4.5% still seems a little high but phones are so damn useful.) It's something that is worth actively tracking.

This is the main screen on my smartphone. It's dumb. I made it dumb for a reason. I keep the screen in grey scale most of the day. I removed almost every app that isn't informing my health or productivity. I only receive call notifications and alerts from my child's daycare. I do this because I'm addicted to easy dopamine. But I know I don't have an endless supply so I preserve it the best I can so I can use it for the most important things. Writing, deep work, health, etc. For anyone who wants to make your smartphone dumb. This is the app I use: https://buff.ly/4aTNtX3 #productivity #work #personalgrowth
