We had a wonderful time at Gilead Sciences' beautiful Parsippany office. Committed to creating a healthier world for all people, 16 volunteers from Gilead's Quality Assurance team assembled 240 hygiene kits to benefit the clients of NewBridge Services, Inc. The volunteers learned about NewBridge's incredible work of bringing balance to people's lives through counseling, housing and education. Serving children, adults, and seniors, NewBridge offers comprehensive support services to address a wide range of community needs—not limited to counseling, addiction recovery, educational programs, and residential care. Thank you, Viki Ferlauto, Head of Counseling Services, for coming out to speak about the incredible work at NewBridge! And a massive shoutout to Antonia Taylor and Karen Dewees from Gilead for giving Life Science Cares New York the opportunity to facilitate this impactful engagement! If you are in the life sciences industry in the metro area and are curious about how to get involved with Life Science Cares New York, don't hesitate to reach out to anna.perrotti@lifesciencecares.org!

A psychoactive substance affects the central nervous system (CNS), changing behavior, perception, and emotions. Examples include stimulants (caffeine, nicotine), depressants (alcohol, benzodiazepines), hallucinogens (LSD, psilocybin), opioids (heroin, morphine), and cannabinoids (marijuana). These substances can alter actions, sensory experiences, and emotional states, potentially causing euphoria, anxiety, hallucinations, or enhanced sensations. Understanding their effects is crucial for health, effective treatment of substance use disorders, and navigating legal and social implications. This knowledge is particularly important in harm reduction programs aimed at minimizing the negative consequences associated with drug use and supporting recovery efforts.

In today's society, the scourge of drug misuse continues to wreak havoc on individuals, families, and communities. As professionals committed to making a positive impact, it's crucial for us to raise awareness and take proactive steps to combat this epidemic. One powerful approach is fostering a culture of prevention and education. By providing resources and information about the dangers of drug use, we empower individuals to make informed decisions and resist peer pressure. Education initiatives in schools, workplaces, and community centers can equip people with the knowledge and skills they need to say no to drugs. Additionally, building strong support networks is essential. By creating safe spaces for open dialogue and offering support to those struggling with addiction, we can break the cycle of stigma and isolation. Together, we can advocate for accessible treatment options and recovery programs that prioritize holistic wellness and rehabilitation.

Key takeaways: Recovery is possible. Buprenorphine is safe, effective, and the standard of care for treating this lethal condition. It should be prescribed just like hydrocodone -- much safer than hydrocodone and oxycodone. Peer navigators and others need to be funded.

Great piece by Dr. Chris Buresh who has catalyzed and championed the use of buprenorphine for treating opioid use disorder (and preventing OD's) at the Seattle Children's Emergency Department. https://lnkd.in/gNSijZ2d
