CairnSurgical, Inc. (#LSIAlumni) closed a $4.5 million Series A2 financing, led by Morningside Ventures. The company will use these new funds to complete the currently-enrolling U.S. pivotal trial of its Breast Cancer Locator (BCL™) System and implement a limited commercial launch of the technology in select European markets. Current Breast Conserving Surgery (BCS) fails to remove the entire tumor about 20% of the time, primarily because current breast tumor localization techniques do not provide the information required to achieve precise removal of the entire tumor. Cairn’s BCL System is designed to improve the accuracy of breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) by providing critical information about the tumor to the surgeon, including size, shape, and precise location. Congratulations to LSI Alumni Dave Danielsen and the entire Cairn Surgical team on this major milestone! To learn more about Cairn Surgical, connect with Dave Danielsen at LSI Europe ‘24 this September in Sintra, Portugal, where he will present the latest updates on Cairn.

The poster will present: A quality initiative in BRCA testing and timing of BRCA test prior to Surgery in HER2- early-stage breast cancer. This quality initiative focused on BRCA testing among HER2 – BC pts led to an improvement from 44% to 56% of pts being tested. Among those who were tested, there was an increase from 58% to 80% tested prior to surgery. Poster F1 | Abstract 287 Link: https://lnkd.in/eH2Dr4pd Authors: Vikram C. Advanced ovarian cancer patients who receive robotic surgery benefit from improved recovery, which could allow them to start chemotherapy and the journey to recovery sooner, a new study has found. The study, MIRRORS, is an initial clinical study to assess the feasibility of a larger-scale trial, and has the potential to greatly improve recovery and quality of life for women having surgery for advanced ovarian cancer following initial chemotherapy. Funded by women’s cancer charity GRACE, it was led by #RoyalSurrey’s specialist gynaecological oncology surgeons Christina Uwins and Simon Butler-Manuel. Miss Uwins said: “Robotic surgery allows surgeons to perform long complex procedures though tiny cuts in the abdomen. It’s very promising that the findings of this feasibility study show that robotic surgery has the potential to significantly improve the recovery and quality of life for women undergoing this surgery.” Read more: https://ow.ly/JvyF50Rb9mb

👀 Watch Dr. Jesse Boehm from the Koch Institute at MIT talk about the impact of tissue donation through DTRF's partnership with Pattern.org. When surgeries are appropriate, fresh desmoid tissue samples can be collected for research. Your fresh desmoid tumor tissue sample could hold the key to unlocking new discoveries about what drives desmoid tumors. With your prior online consent through Pattern.org, a small amount of excess tissue from your surgery will be collected and sent to a key research partner such as the Boehm Lab at the Koch Institute of MIT. In the fight against cancer, every step counts, and surgical oncology plays a pivotal role in patient care. Here are the key types of surgeries: 1️⃣ Curative Surgery: Aims to remove all cancer, offering hope for a cancer-free future. 2️⃣ Palliative Surgery: Focuses on relieving pain and symptoms, enhancing quality of life. 3️⃣ Preventive Surgery: Reduces the risk of cancer by removing tissues before cancer develops. 4️⃣ Reconstructive Surgery: Restores appearance and function post-treatment, helping patients regain confidence. At the forefront of cancer care, surgical oncology empowers patients with hope and healing. 💪🌟 #actioncancerhospital #cancercare #surgicaloncology #cancer #oncology

Excited to share that the latest liquid biopsy results from our TRICIA trial will be presented by Dr.Mark Basik at #ASCO2024 June 2, 2024 Poster session 9:00 am - Noon Hall A Breast Cancer- Local/ Regional/ Adjuvant Abstract 610 Poster Board 202 The TRICIA trial recruited non-pCR TNBC patients for ctDNA measurements at pre-operative and post-operative time points using hospital-based tumor-specific personalized assays. Our results demonstrate that ctDNA assays based on 5 personalized variants per patient and performed after NAC and before surgery can provide very strong prognostic information. Local and distant recurrence can both be predicted with a lead time of 9-10 months from the appearance of detectable ctDNA. These results validate the use of a hospital-based tumor bespoke platform for clinical testing. We thank our funding partners CQDM, EXACTIS Innovation and the JGH Foundation. 📢 Research update! We are thrilled to announce that a new paper from our trial investigating leg lymphoedema after melanoma surgery has been published in the Annals of Surgical Oncology. The Evaluation of Groin Lymphadenectomy Extent for Melanoma (EAGLE FM) study measured leg lymphoedema, a chronic swelling that can occur after surgical removal of groin lymph nodes for melanoma. The study’s primary aim is to determine if there was a difference in the 5-year disease-free survival rate between patients who underwent additional removal of pelvic nodes at groin dissection and those who did not. Stay tuned for these results to be reported late 2024. The trial's findings revealed a trend of higher lymphoedema detection in patients who had additional removal of pelvic nodes compared to those who did not, although this trend did not reach statistical significance due to our small sample size. These results highlight the importance of early detection and management of leg lymphoedema, irrespective of the extent of surgery. With proper monitoring, the severity of this condition can be minimised.
