As I come towards my 58th birthday and now in the 36th year of working in Indian industry, I pause consciously on occasion to reflect on the journey, which has been momentous and exciting - and the key learnings I have picked up on the way.
I started my career with Hindustan Ciba- Geigy, whose parent is a constituent of the company now called Novartis. The most memorable stint for me in the Management Trainee experience was the field stint in Sales where I visited Kolhapur, Aurangabad and Pune and actually chatted up pharmacists and distributors, trying to figure out what prompted them to order the brands and quantities that they did. This was also the time when the Dealers' association in one of the cities had blacklisted one manufacturer - which meant they were basically not going to stock the said company's products for a month, a significant hit in sales. While we were not directly affected, it was something everyone was looking at as an example of trade power, and the natural curiosity on how it would play out. While that was a slightly darker element, overall the friendliness, warmth and generosity of the trade stood out, with people going out of the way to answer questions (and yes, I had many, many of those!) and making sure I got all the info I needed.
Key learnings - nothing beats being in the marketplace (much later, I was introduced to the Japanese concept of the Gemba). Nothing beats talking to the people in the field. Nothing beats asking a lot of questions.
