It is with profound sadness that I reflect upon the passing of Mr. Ratan Tata, an extraordinary industrialist, philanthropist, and leader. As a person who grew up in Jamshedpur (a.k.a Tatanagar)—a town that flourished under the vision of his ancestor, Jamestji Nusserwanji Tata, I have been deeply shaped by the Tatas’ legacy. A town unparalleled in its foresight and infrastructure, is a living testament to the Tatas’ unparalleled dedication to societal welfare and environmental consciousness.
Over 40 years ago, Jamshedpur already echoed with a slogan that was far ahead of its time: “Clean City, Green City, Tata Steel City.” The town itself was designed with precision, care, and a vision that extended beyond profit. Parks, wide roads, and robust civic amenities were the norm, not the exception. This slogan wasn’t mere words; it was a way of life in Jamshedpur. The cleanliness and greenery of Jamshedpur became the standard by which I measured other cities, and it always felt like Mr. Ratan Tata carried this spirit with him wherever he went.
With his characteristic humility and quiet determination, he built on this foundation and expanded the Tata legacy across the globe. His achievements are awe-inspiring: under his leadership, Tata Steel became a global powerhouse, Tata Motors launched the affordable Nano car to bring driving within the reach of the masses, and Tata Consultancy Services - Research grew into one of the world’s leading IT services firms. Yet, despite these towering accomplishments, he remained a man of the people, approachable and grounded. He exemplified the rare quality of humility in power—a trait that has become a rarity in today’s corporate world.
His legacy isn’t just about business; it’s about values. It’s about inspiring a sense of responsibility that extends beyond oneself, to one’s community, and to the world at large.
