I was chatting with a university student about her career path. She asked how she can maximize her earning potential in her career. I thought for a while and said “it’s really as easy as C.” Let me explain. If you align your career with achieving a job in the C-suite, you can absolutely achieve high levels of compensation (for a W-2 employee anyway). For example: -Go into business operations: Chief Operating Officer -Go into engineering and IT: Chief Information Officer or Chief Technology Officer -Go into accounting or finance: Chief Financial Officer -Go into marketing: Chief Marketing Officer -Go into Human Resources: Chief People Officer Does that make sense? My new vision encompasses my whole life, not just the business. I'm still tweaking the wording but it definitely feels more me. It aligns with the things I really do want and it will make me absolutely know where I am headed. Amending my vision also means I am amending my services and offering. Not right away, not a massive change, but a few tweaks to bring out my magic and to work on what I love, not just want I've fallen into. Because this has been the story of my career - I 'fell' into admin work 20 years ago. All because the council didn't think I would make a good child & family worker...I KNOW I would have been a fantastic person for that role, but I took the admin position in the team, 1 year later was made office manager and the rest is history! What I do know is that without the last 20 years experience, I wouldn't be able to do my job now, I wouldn't have the skills to run my business, deliver excellence to clients and have the confidence to tweak my offering. So although this wasn't my vision all those years ago, I have the power to create a vision for the next 20 years, one that aligns with me and my magic. It always amazes me that corporate folks thousands of miles away can think that they know what's going on in your area of work. They watch things through pictures and videos and think they can tell you what you need to be doing day by day. They also think that they can tell you the equipment that you need to do your job efficiently. My suggestion: Unless you have been to the site, worked in the industry, and been in the shoes of the people you are managing, don't think you know more than the people on the ground. There are a lot of different factors that come into play, but the word of the people on the ground should be one of the biggest factors that management takes into account. The only one that outweighs these opinions is the budget. If your work is to manage people that are a plane flight away, do yourself a favor and listen to the people that you are managing when making decisions for them. If you don't, you are going to lose good people because they don't have the resources that THEY need. Not every site is going to be the exact same, and management needs to treat each site as it's own and stop using the cookie-cutter approach.
