Businesses can try to spin this issue all they want, but simply put, not paying your intern staff is WILDLY unethical. Course credit simply isn’t enough, especially in this economy, and that structure negatively impacts students and entry-level applicants who can’t afford to take on unpaid labor to move ahead in their field.
As someone who hired and managed interns for several years (which was honestly the highlight of my job!), their dedication, curiosity, and work ethic is unmatched. If anything, I learned far more from them than they did from me. Interns deserve compensation like any other employee.
It’s 2024! Paid internships only, people!!

Should you do Unpaid Internships? 🤔
In the competitive landscape of professional development, the question of whether to pursue unpaid internships remains a hot topic. As someone who has navigated the complexities of the job market, I believe it's crucial to carefully consider the pros and cons before committing to such opportunities.
Pros:
✅ Experience: Unpaid internships can provide invaluable hands-on experience in your chosen field. This practical exposure can significantly enhance your skill set, making you more attractive to future employers.
✅ Networking: Interning in a professional setting allows you to build meaningful connections within your industry. Networking is a powerful tool for career growth, and an unpaid internship can be a stepping stone to future opportunities.
✅ Resume Building: While compensation is lacking, the experience gained from an unpaid internship can be a solid addition to your resume. It showcases your dedication to your field and demonstrates a proactive approach to your professional development.
Cons:
❌ Financial Strain: Unpaid internships often require individuals to cover their own living expenses, which can be a significant burden for many. This financial strain may limit accessibility, favoring those with external support.
❌ Exploitation Concerns: There is an ongoing debate about the ethics of unpaid internships. In some cases, interns may find themselves performing tasks that go beyond the scope of a learning experience, raising questions about fair compensation for the work performed.
⚠️ Reflect on your long-term career objectives. If an unpaid internship aligns with your goals and offers a unique learning experience, it may be worth the short-term sacrifice. However, if financial constraints are a significant concern, exploring other options becomes crucial.
In conclusion, the decision to pursue an unpaid internship is highly subjective and should be made after careful consideration of individual circumstances. While they can offer valuable experience and networking opportunities, the associated challenges cannot be ignored. It's essential to strike a balance that aligns with your career goals, financial situation, and personal values.

If you’re thinking about turning down an unpaid internship, you should reconsider. Here’s why: unpaid internships offer something far more valuable than a paycheck – real-world experience.
They give you the chance to develop hands-on skills, build a network of industry contacts, and learn directly from professionals in the field.
In a competitive job market, especially in Australia, experience is often the deciding factor. Accepting an unpaid internship can give you that edge. It's an investment in your future that can lead to paid roles and set you apart from other candidates.
