I recently changed my job title to tease the start-up we’ve been planning. Now I’m excited to announce the launch of Outerface℠. We’re experiencing an inflection point in physical spaces. For years, digital has impacted brick-and-mortar retail. Then the pandemic threw offices and downtowns for a loop. And a housing shortage continues to grow. Our routines and needs are shifting, and along with them the spaces where we live, work, and play are changing, merging, and being reinvented. Outerface is a brand studio for physical spaces. We work with real estate developers, hotels, restaurants, retailers, museums, care facilities, and others. My co-founder, Scott Petrichko ⚙️, and I have spent years working for creative agencies on global brands. The skills we gained provide unique perspective when applied to spaces. I've gotten pretty good at spotting what fuels or fumbles innovation in organizations we work with. Two big ones? Curiosity and a comfort with ambiguity—diving in even when the outcome’s unclear. Did you know Play-Doh started as a 1930s wallpaper cleaner? When natural gas and vinyl wallpaper came along, Kutol Products was on the brink of collapse. But here’s where curiosity and comfort with the unknown worked their magic: ▶️ In the 1950s, Joe McVicker joined the family biz and discovered from his teacher sister-in-law, Kay, that kids loved using the cleaner as modeling clay. ▶️ Joe and Kay had the guts to rebrand it as “Play-Doh,” and the rest is history. ▶️ Play-Doh hit the shelves in 1956, and with a little help from “Captain Kangaroo,” sales skyrocketed. By 1958, it was a $3 million success, saving the company and birthing a new market. Kay’s curiosity and Joe’s embrace of ambiguity turned a near-failure into a household name (and an iconic smell... right?)
