#ICYMI The Alleghany Journal - an electronic newspaper for the Alleghany Highlands, recently shared the following article, highlighting the work of our Safe Surfin' Foundation Board and partners. Please read below: A very informative event took place earlier today (Mon., July 29, 2024) at the Alleghany County/Covington Sheriff's Office: Captain Chris Conner and Investigator Jeremy Morris introduced Eddie Worth of the Safe Surfin' Foundation, who noted a Covington Moose Lodge $3,000 donation of a special computer to help local authorities deal with online sex predators. According to Worth, at any one time, up to 500,000 online sex predators attempt to target juveniles (mainly young females) for sex. Worth also noted that there are other types of online predation going on, including extortion and human trafficking. Covington Moose Lodge President Jason Hall took time out to briefly speak with the Journal about his organization's big effort to support the fight against these online scourges. SO excited to meet Kamala Harris, and ask her to repeal SESTA/FOSTA. What Is SESTA/FOSTA? SESTA/FOSTA refers to a set of laws passed under the Trump administration: The Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (SESTA) and the Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA). The laws effectively suspend Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996. Rather than preventing the online exploitation of trafficked persons, these laws have hurt the people they intended to help, pushing sex workers and trafficking victims into more dangerous and exploitative situations. Together Against Human Trafficking' Gemeinsam Gegen Menschenhandel is a German alliance of 40 non-profit organizations dedicated to combating human trafficking, particularly sexual exploitation. We advocate for the interests of those affected by human trafficking and prostitution by raising public awareness, promoting academic discourse, reducing demand, shaping policy, and amplifying the voices of survivors. We are proud to be a key partner in the VANGUARD project to fight human trafficking. Our primary responsibility is conducting case studies with survivors and perpetrators to identify patterns and methods that can lead to better prevention and strategies to combat human trafficking. The focus of our study is on manipulation tactics such as the "Loverboy Method." Our findings will contribute to prevention guidelines, awareness campaigns and recommendations for effectual anti-trafficking measures. Did you know Nevada has the second highest rate of sex trafficking cases in the U.S., with 5.80 cases per 100,000 people? This is a stark reality, especially in areas like Las Vegas, driven by our state's transient population and the commercial sex industry. In 2021, the National Human Trafficking Hotline identified 201 cases and 296 victims in Nevada. But these numbers barely scratch the surface due to underreporting from fear and language barriers. We need to step up and support victims. Get involved by raising awareness, supporting local initiatives, and pushing for stronger legislation. 💜Shining a Light on Child Sex Trafficking in Ohio💜 I recently had the privilege of attending the Summit Safety Council meeting, where I was profoundly moved by the powerful words of Melissa Brown, founder of a remarkable nonprofit, Safe Harbor Ohio, dedicated to combating child sex trafficking in Ohio. Her passion and dedication to this critical cause resonated deeply with me, and I am honored to share their mission with you all. Child sex trafficking is an under-reported and underground crime, making it challenging to grasp its full scope. Despite being seventh in population, Ohio ranks fifth in reported cases of Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking (DMST). This discrepancy highlights the urgent need for increased awareness, training, and research to address the issue effectively. While more funding and research are needed to understand the full extent of the problem, what we do know is deeply troubling. The National Human Trafficking Hotline reported a 19% increase in individual victims and survivors contacting the hotline between 2018-2019. This statistic underscores the growing need for a committed community to provide long-term support to these vulnerable children as they recover from complex trauma. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these young survivors. LCHT anti-trafficking trainings localize the issues of labor and sex trafficking. In any community, it can be difficult to examine the fault lines of how and why vulnerability exists. Kara (our Education and Partnerships Director) says, “In Indigenous communities, many of the vulnerabilities are systemic and rooted in historical trauma and genocide. Perpetrators target reservations in particular because they know that vulnerability exists, combined with a lack of enforcement and resources. It hits hard for people, not just to hear, but to wrap their heads around a solution.” But finding the solution shouldn’t be on Indigenous communities alone. Tell a trusted friend or family member where you are going and when you will be back. 👀 Be aware of your surroundings. Pay attention to people around you, look for any unusual activity, and be cautious of cars driving slow near you. 🚨 Invest in safety items that draw attention to you.
