In our most recent episode of "Ask the Experts," we were joined by Sean Bailey, research analyst at Downtown Van, Business Improvement Association for Vancouver’s downtown. Last week's video was a taster, but our blog goes deeper — unpacking our discussion and Sean's experience on the vital role of data storytelling. As he puts it: “Data storytelling can democratize the data itself and democratize the dialogue around what cities need and help people understand where their city is going or why their city has particular challenges.” 👉 Read the full blog here: https://lnkd.in/gN6vc_Gf

Interesting read of the role of the CDO in local organizations. "Without an explicit owner of data who understands the opportunities — and challenges — of AI, cities will have a difficult time safely and effectively taking advantage of it." Having proper data governance is going to be imperative for local governments to safely take advantage of all the new tools that are being developed.
Just a few years ago, only a handful of cities had chief data officers. Now that the position is more prevalent, experts take stock of what it takes to build an effective, data-driven local government.

A few weeks ago, I told my son that I’d be out of town for a few days in June for a data governance conference (#DGIQ). I expected the typical teenage boy response, but instead he surprised me with, “Dad, what’s data governance?” Admittedly, explaining data governance to a teen was harder than I expected. My first couple of attempts didn’t hit the mark, but I adjusted and found an approach that worked best for him. What a great reminder. As data professionals, we often think that our value is tied to our technical abilities, or in our knowledge about data concepts. Those are both true, but in my experience, our most valuable superpower is being able to effectively explain data concepts to those who aren’t data professionals. It’s all about connecting with our stakeholders and communicating in ways that resonate for them. But, as with my own son, sometimes that’s easier said than done. In my latest blog I’ve listed a few techniques that have helped me over the years, but I’d love to hear from you as well. What are some things that have worked for you when telling your data governance story?

Commercial Account Executive @ Snowflake | Mobilising the world's data - Ask me about the Data Cloud
Citizen satisfaction, engagement, and communication are not only important but are the lifeblood of any Local Council. They must anticipate change, create innovative solutions and better help people overall — in part by maximising their massive amounts of data. To deliver on this vision, the Town of Gilbert turned to Snowflake to centralise departmental data, bolster its data governance strategy, and enable public-facing dashboards that better serve the community at large. The result? Performance dashboards that help provide visibility and transparency, informing the public about local trends involving criminal activity, mental health crises, pothole repairs, graffiti removal and much more. https://lnkd.in/gjCBuCha
