Something I've learned since getting involved in the field of sustainability for the tech sector is that it's a relatively small community and networking is invaluable as you're never more than a couple of people away from someone who knows something or someone that will help. I was speaking at an event with my good friend Richard Kenny, CEO of Interact, the other week and we got talking about The Circular Mile and how some of our ITAD partners who are charities are having to pay full price for spare parts and can't afford the accredited secure erasure software that their commercial counterparts use. One of our partners literally has shelves of devices that are just waiting for parts that they don't have the money to buy. Rich told me that Interact provide their Cedar Enterprise erasure software for free to qualifying charities! It is ADISA accredited, which is the industry standard for security and provides reassurance to companies donating devices that their data will be properly handled and sanitised. I was also chatting earlier this week to Kevin Towers, Chairman of Techbuyer, and Ross Cockburn from Reusing IT, and found out about amazing work they are doing to provide (REALLY) low cost laptops to families on benefits, and ways charity ITADs can obtain low cost new and refurbished spare parts. Today, I've got an email from Nick Hayhurst with information about Cedar software and he's also been in touch with one of our charity ITAD partners! At our last Circular Mile partner meeting, George Cook from Computers 4 Charity told us about how - through being involved with the Circular Mile - he was able to connect with another one of our ITAD partners who operate a social enterprise and offer them free use of software that Computers 4 Charity developed in house. The one thing I keep harping on about is the critical importance of us all working together to achieve the same goals, and it's great to see these alliances coming to fruition. Watch this space as I see an opportunity for The Circular Mile to bridge this gap for charity ITADs across the country. Really interesting read about the wider impact and SROI of charity shops. 29% of the £75.3 billion in social value generated by charity shops is linked to a sense of community, and being met with friendliness and the compassion people report when visiting a charity shop. 🧦 Something as simple as a pair of socks can make a huge difference to a charity and the people they're working with. 🧦 Caroline Allouf, Referral and Outreach Manager at the Street Storage charity in London, was delighted when the Business Design Centre in Islington responded to her ‘charity need’ for underwear. The socks have gone down a storm with guests at Street Storage after the charity has been giving them out each week. Receiving donations from generous businesses like the Business Design Centre means that money raised by Street Storage can go towards expanding the charity further.   Caroline from the charity commented: “We will most definitely use A Good Thing again. In fact, I get excited each time an offer pops up in my emails!” A huge thank you to Kirsty Jakulis and the team at the Business Design Centre, who have become huge champions of A Good Thing, donating numerous items to charities across London – including notebooks, training shoes, tableware and pens. They've saved thousands of pounds worth of items from landfill, allowing charities to cut spending on 'things' and focus money on other crucial areas.
