This new paper from the NIH RECOVER program delves into the impact of COVID-19 on kidney health in children and adolescents under 21 years old in the United States. - Study includes 864,637 children and young people divided into three groups: those with pre-existing chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury (AKI) during the initial COVID-19 infection, and those without prior kidney issues. The findings indicate that children and adolescents with COVID-19 face a higher risk of developing severe kidney problems later on, irrespective of any pre-existing kidney conditions. This research underscores the critical importance of preventing COVID infections and reinfections in children, emphasising the necessity of monitoring kidney function in paediatric COVID-19 patients. Furthermore, it reinforces the significance of accurate diagnosis, appropriate healthcare access, and the maintenance of medical codes on patient records, all crucial for ensuring optimal care pathways for children. Let's work towards addressing these crucial needs. Long Covid Kids is there to help. Ok, trying this again as LinkedIn said it was problematic. Not sure how sharing education is problematic but here we are 🤷♀️ 💡 I discovered an interesting article by Unfabled's Lyndsey England that discusses an existing malaria treatment and PCOS. Chinese researchers studying fat cells in mice stumbled upon a reduction in PCOS-like symptoms. 💡A small study was conducted with 19 women, with promising results which I put in my original post but I have removed-you will have to go to the article to find out!) 💡Have a read of the article here to learn what this could mean for PCOS sufferers and let me know what you think in the comments! https://loom.ly/zXeGtOY (photo has nothing to do with the article. Just me sharing the goodness of #womenshealth) #PCOS #medicalstudy

The Biden administration's initiative, led by Francis Collins, MD, MPH, aims to eliminate hepatitis C by 2030. The strategy aims to: 1. Improve Testing: Introducing point-of-care hepatitis C RNA tests for same-day diagnosis, with remote follow-up. 2. Enhance Treatment Access: Implementing a "Netflix" model for hepatitis C medications, simplifying access and potentially reducing financial barriers. 3. Educate and Prevent: Increasing awareness, screening efforts, and focusing on preventing new infections. A Validation Study at UNC: A UNC Site, led by Dr. Andrew Moon, will conduct a validation study for point-of-care hepatitis C RNA tests, funded by DCN Diagnostics, to facilitate FDA approval. This comprehensive approach targets testing innovations, treatment accessibility, and education to eliminate hepatitis C as a major public health concern. #HepC #HepatitisC #HepatitisCAwareness #UNC #DeptofMed #unchealth

Last week, our CEO Reenie McCarthy spoke at an EveryLife Foundation for Rare Diseases scientific workshop focused on the challenges and opportunities in developing much-needed therapies for ultra-rare diseases. In a panel entitled “When Data Isn’t the Problem: Challenges in Very Small Population Therapy Development,” Reenie joined Emily Milligan of the Barth Syndrome Foundation, Justin Hopkin of the National Niemann-Pick Disease Foundation, A.J. Allen of Institute for Advanced Clinical Trials for Children (I-Act for Children), and moderator Esther Krofah of Milken Institute Health. Despite significant legislative advancements like the Orphan Drug Act, the vast majority of #RareDiseases still lack FDA-approved treatments – and navigating the drug development and regulatory landscape is even more challenging for diseases that affect exceedingly small patient populations. The #BarthSyndrome community’s ongoing decade-long journey toward a first-ever treatment is an important case in point. All stakeholders – affected individuals, patient advocacy groups, sponsors, regulators, policymakers – must work together to identify viable paths forward for potentially promising therapies for ultra-rare diseases and to ensure that policies support innovation on behalf of all patients regardless of the rarity of their condition. #not2rare2care

I am pleased to share our recent publication "Age-specific transmission dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 during the first 2 years of the pandemic" in the Netherlands, published in PNAS Nexus: https://lnkd.in/ddbeTEz6. In this study, we developed an inference-based model to reconstruct the burden of true (reported and unreported) infections and hospital admissions by age (children, adolescents, and adults), region, and immune status (primary infections vs re-infections and breakthrough infections) over seven waves of four SARS-CoV-2 variants (wild-type, Alpha, Delta, and Omicron BA.1). Joint work with Otilia Boldea (first author), Amir Alipoor, Sen Pei, and Jeffrey Shaman.

ANNOUNCEMENT: We are excited to finally let the world know about a powerful, ongoing educational series called "Women & Autoimmune Diseases" -- which will begin in late April/early May. My Care Friends has partnered with United States of Healthcare to bring forth actionable knowledge and know-how related to this topic from so many angles! My Care Friends' Founder/CEO Todd Keitz and Director of Community Engagement Katie Seymour, Ed.D, along with Joyce Yaccarino Griggs, Founder/CEO of United States of Healthcare, have been moved as they've been developing this series. The enthusiastic response they've been receiving from women, healthcare practitioners, and everyone who is touched directly or indirectly by the challenges women face has fueled their passion for the topic even more than when they started -- and that passion was palpable from the start! More than 23.5 million people in the U.S. are affected by autoimmune diseases and approximately 80% of those with autoimmune diseases are women. This series will highlight a myriad of topics such as journaling and patient generated data, the overall scope of the challenge, getting to the diagnosis, pearls and tips to partner with your care team, and navigating the psychological aspects along the continuum of it all. We will bring forth thought leaders providing knowledge and know-how through podcasts, webinars, and educational material. Voices will include patients, caregivers, advocates, physicians, nurses, and many others who touch -- and are touched -- by women with autoimmune diseases. Check out our brief introduction video by clicking below and stay tuned for more information in the coming month(s). #autoimmunediseases #women https://lnkd.in/ePqDp7nn
