Since 1949, Mental Health America and its affiliates have recognized the month of May as Mental Health Awareness Month, an observance that raises awareness, provides support and resources, and reduces the stigma surrounding mental health. Now more than ever, we must raise awareness about mental health, especially as depression is on the rise for women and younger adults, and women and younger Americans are more likely to evaluate their mental health as fair or poor compared with men and older adults. Stigma surrounding mental health creates significant barriers to awareness and assistance. When societal prejudice and discrimination against those with mental health conditions prevail, individuals may hesitate to acknowledge their struggles or seek help. This reluctance stems from fear of judgment, alienation, or even potential repercussions such as job loss or social exclusion. As a result, people may suffer in silence, leading to delayed treatment and exacerbation of their conditions. Moreover, the impact of stigma extends beyond individual experiences, affecting the broader community's understanding and response to mental health issues. It perpetuates misconceptions, stereotypes, and myths, further hindering efforts to promote awareness and foster understanding. In turn, this can lead to increased morbidity rates as individuals struggle without adequate support and resources. Addressing stigma is essential for creating an environment where individuals feel safe and supported in seeking assistance for their mental health concerns. By challenging societal attitudes and fostering open dialogue, we can break down these barriers and encourage individuals to prioritize their well-being. Education plays a vital role in dispelling myths and misinformation surrounding mental health, promoting empathy, and cultivating a supportive culture where individuals feel empowered to seek help without fear of judgment. As friends or colleagues, it's important to be vigilant and attentive to signs of distress in those around us. By actively listening, offering support, and normalizing conversations about mental health, we can create a space where individuals feel comfortable sharing their struggles and seeking assistance. Additionally, knowing how to recommend professional assistance or resources can be invaluable in helping someone access the care they need. Ultimately, by challenging stigma and promoting understanding, we can ensure that individuals receive the support and resources necessary to manage their mental health effectively, leading to healthier, more resilient communities overall.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the importance of taking care of our emotional well-being. This is a topic that deserves our compassion and understanding, as mental health challenges can affect anyone, regardless of age, background, or circumstances. During this month, let's come together as a community to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and provide support for those who may be struggling. Mental health is just as vital as physical health, and we all have a role to play in fostering a more empathetic and inclusive society. Whether it's reaching out to a loved one, educating ourselves on mental health resources, or advocating for better access to care, every small act can make a meaningful difference. Let's use this month as an opportunity to cultivate kindness, promote open dialogues, and remind one another that we're not alone in our mental health journeys. #MentalHealth #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth #NoStigma

Young people today face significant mental health challenges due to factors such as social media pressure, academic stress, and economic uncertainty. Constant comparison on social media can lead to low self-esteem and anxiety. High expectations in education contribute to stress and depression. Economic instability creates chronic stress and uncertainty. Relationships, both positive and negative, play a crucial role in mental health. Limited access to mental health services and stigma surrounding mental health issues prevent many young people from seeking help. Addressing these factors requires a comprehensive approach to support and promote mental well-being.
You’ve got a huge task ahead of you. Mental health services are at breaking point and more young people than ever before need support. You promised early mental health support hubs in every community and reducing waiting times. A step in the right direction. And we will hold you accountable. But young people need so much more. Be bold and be brave. We need you to reimagine the mental health system and tackle the things that make young people’s mental health worse. Your campaign slogan was ‘change’. We need big change now more than ever. We look forward to working with you.

We have a mental health crisis in America coupled with chronic underinvestment. This is no more true than in communities of color that can suffer from inequity, lack of access and discrimination. At AbsoluteCare, we are trying to do our (small) part to create access to integrated care considering the whole person including care for behavioral health and substance use disorders. Frankly, with prodding from our clinical leaders, we have expanded our behavioral and addiction expertise now into every community we serve. But, it is not enough and we all need to do better. #beyondmedicine.
