It isn't just common sense that the bursts of colors and lovely fragrance can boost your mood: it's science. A 2017 Vice article reported that a research study conducted by Harvard's Dr. Nancy Etcoff found that people felt an increase in feelings of compassion and kindness for others, had less worry and anxiety, and generally felt less bummed out overall when flowers are present in their home. There's an ancient folk tradition of whipping people on Easter Monday. 🤯 No, I'm not making this up. All across Eastern Europe, this bizarre ritual dating back to pagan times is still practiced by some people today. Let me be clear though - I'm talking about young men lightly striking women with handmade whips made of willow branches, symbolizing purification and fertility after Lent. Wild, right? On the surface, it seems utterly bizarre - even abusive or misogynistic through our modern lens. But when you peel back the layers, I believe this custom hints at deeper universal truths encoded in our ancestral roots. The way I see it, fertilization requires letting go of the old to spark new growth. In other words, seeds must break open their hard shells before their potential can blossom. And, sometimes we all need a metaphorical whipping - a shock to our system - to release stale patterns and calcified ways of being. The genius of ancient traditions is how they symbolize our perennial need for renewal using primal, elemental imagery. In this case, willow branches as rods of life-giving water and verdant spring emergence. The fertilizing lash unlocking the feminine's creative womb after winter's dormancy. Brilliant. So as bizarre as it may seem, maybe this whipping ritual deserves a second look. Orienting your senses to what you find pleasant can be incredibly resourceful. For me lilacs and butterflies spark delight! The smell of lilacs is so beautiful to me. And lilacs are all around right now, so I get to their lovely scent most times I’m outside. And butterflies, well, I think so many of us enjoy spotting these delicate creatures flying or resting about while we’re out. I took some time to bask in the floral scent and watch this pretty little critter, while noticing the ease it brought to my body. Orienting is so simple, yet it can really help the mind & body feel a sense of safety and peace. It’s also a really individual thing! For example my wife really doesn’t like the smell of lilacs 😂 So she would definitely need to orient to different sights and smells, because these flowers bring about inpleasant memories and emotions. It’s a great practice to tune into what in your environment YOU find delightful, peaceful, calming, etc. And once you do, see if you can tune into these often.
