In South London, The United Kingdom, an adaptive reuse project took a former pig shed, and made it into a relaxing retreat at the edge of a forest. Utilizing natural and local materials, the home has thick plaster walls to retain heat in the winter and to lower heat absorbtion in the summer. Timber columns are used throughout the interior, as well as a larch wood plank roof, all native to the surrounding region. Inside the home, furnishings, kitchenware, ceramics and even lampshades are all handmade by local artisans. These combined efforts, lower the structures overall carbon footprint, making it a bastion of sustainable living. Designers paid careful attention to the layout of the single story residence, ensuring that every room had expansive views of the surroundings grasslands with forest in the distance. This creates a strong connection between the residents of the home and the natural environment. Natural sunlight, expansive views and fresh air venthilation were thw core focuses of this project, and the home goes a long way to deliver on them all. Throughout my career, I’ve witnessed how integrating sustainability into design preserves the environment and transforms the way we live and interact with our spaces. Clay bricks, a material that’s been around for centuries, are now finding new life in modern architecture, offering both aesthetic appeal and functional benefits in ways that might surprise you. From the intricate, expandable brick partitions inspired by nature’s designs to multifunctional walls that incorporate greenery, bricks are no longer just for exterior construction. They’re being used in everything from reducing indoor air pollution to creating unique, repurposed furniture that blends seamlessly with historic surroundings. Some would say it's the fresh air, peace and quiet, and some the constant closeness to nature; nonetheless, we all agree there’s something unique about the countryside. As you step inside a farmhouse, all of these qualities can be reflected through the lens of contemporary interior design, creating a welcoming, light, and calm ambiance. Known for their place in rural or agricultural settings and designed for farm living, traditional 1700s farmhouses –also known as “folk” houses– were initially influenced by their geographical conditions, enhancing the relationship with the environment. While conserving traditional approaches such as simple floor-plans, gabled roofs, and large porches, farmhouse aesthetics have undergone transformations to adapt to contemporary ways of living. By reusing and using traditional rural architecture as a direct reference, we analyze how current projects follow their singular design strategies: noble materials, spaces connected to the environment, and simple and functional spaces with unique details. Traditionally built with noble, but humble materials, farmhouses are likely to be found with exposed hardwood, brickwork, and rough-hewn stone. Connected to its surroundings through local materials and specific design strategies, its interiors evoke a new type of minimal, rustic atmosphere that uses details to add warmth. Depending on the season and time of the day, the spaces are designed to receive the colors from the changing exterior lighting, intensifying or hiding some aspects of the interior.
