🔋💡 The North American Graphite Alliance (NAGA) is taking action to support domestic battery-grade graphite production for EVs! They've submitted a request to US Trade Representative Katherine Tai to reinstate Section 301 tariffs on Chinese graphite.🚀💪 📈🌐 This move aims to strengthen the local supply chain and ensure a stable source of critical material for EV batteries. To shed light on the importance of this decision, NAGA commissioned a market report from Oxford Economics. The report outlines the impact of reinstating tariffs and the strategic advantages for North American producers. #Graphite #EVs #BatteryMaterials #CleanEnergy #SupplyChainResilience 👇 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇 https://lnkd.in/ebzzU5yn

US President Joe Biden on Tuesday announced an increase in the tariffs on USD 18 billion of imports from #China, including on #solarcells, #batteries, and #electricvehicles (#EVs). 🔹 tariff rate on solar cells - to rise from 25% to 50% in 2024 🔹 tariff rate on lithium-ion EV batteries and battery parts - from 7.5% to 25% in 2024 🔹 tariff rate on lithium-ion non-EV batteries - from 7.5% to 25% in 2026. The aim is to counter China’s unfair trade practices because of which the US sees "unacceptable risks" to its "supply chains and economic security." The new tariffs on Chinese imports, including permanent magnets, EV batteries, semiconductors, and various critical minerals, are a major shift in U.S. trade policy. As a result, domestic production of these essential resources must be a primary focus for the nation moving forward. This shift will boost the growing U.S. rare earth industry, which is essential to the clean-tech sector and our collective transition to renewable energy. It will also attract investment to drive growth in the domestic rare earth market. This is not only good for the U.S. economy, but also strengthens national security by enhancing supply chain resilience for these critical materials. This development emphasizes the importance of our work at Phoenix Tailings in establishing safe, clean, and sustainable domestic rare earth metal supply channels, which can power American innovation in building a greener future. We look forward to further policy decisions to support the growth of U.S. critical material manufacturing and lessen our dependence on single-source supply chains.

North American graphite producers, including Nouveau Monde Graphite | NYSE: NMG and Northern Graphite, are urging 25% tariffs on graphite to reduce reliance on China. The North American Graphite Alliance warns that China's control over the battery-grade graphite supply chain lets it manipulate global markets. As China’s dominance is seen as a growing national security threat, will Canada impose similar tariffs to boost local production? https://lnkd.in/enxj9eWr

The U.S. will impose 25% tariffs on natural flake graphite imported from China starting in 2026. Presently, the U.S. has no domestic graphite industry, importing all of its graphite needs. In 2023, the U.S. imported 40% of its natural graphite from China, paying $3,886.00 per ton. The tariff will raise the average cost to $4,857.00 per ton. However, U.S. producers will have to show that they can deliver a product at competitive prices which is far from certain. https://lnkd.in/g7jzkQpP

On Tuesday, the White House published a list of tariff hikes and entirely new levies on a wide range of Chinese imports worth $18 billion, including electric vehicles, batteries, and critical minerals. The first reactions followed promptly. MP Materials, the only U.S. miner of rare earths, praised the actions as they would "level the playing field for domestic producers." On the other side of the globe, the Australian industry pays special attention to the levy on critical minerals. It will not benefit immediately from the actions but could in the future. The resource-rich country ships most raw materials to China for processing and refining, but this could change eventually. The People's Republic, the counterpart of the new tariffs, unsurprisingly struck a more opposing tone. A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry urged the U.S. Government to scrap the plans, adding that the country would take “necessary measures” to protect its rights and interests. #rawmaterials #criticalminerals #magnets #rareearths #electricvehicles

As a proud member of The North American Graphite Alliance (NAGA), we support the call to reinstate 301 tariffs on three graphite products originating from China, essential for manufacturing lithium-ion battery anode material used in electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The influx of cheap graphite from China, with price manipulation, creates an uneven playing field for domestic graphite suppliers. Demand for graphite products is expected to significantly increase. Let’s reduce our dependency on imported minerals crucial to the production of lithium-ion batteries. Let's work towards fostering fair trade and securing a resilient supply chain for the evolving electric vehicle industry.
