At the start of 2024, I put myself on a 52-week professional development plan focused on becoming a more effective organizational change leader. In the last 6 weeks, I've learned so many interesting things! I've learned about the idea of Reactance from The Catalyst: How to Change Anyone's Mind by Jonah Berger. It gave me a new perspective on how to deal with those who resist the change. It also prepared me to expect that many people may resist it at first. I can now start to empathize with them and seek understanding of their perspective and perceived loss. Prior to this week, I have also learned two tactics to overcome Reactance and get buy-in: Providing a Menu and Asking Questions. This week, I added a third tactic to my tool belt: Highlighting a Gap. This week's post talks about this tactic and offers an additional resource for how to use it. I invite you to join me on this development plan.
