We, at Femtonics, are very proud of our partners, leading experts in neuronal network research, who presented at the recent 𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐚 event at the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies - FENS on June 26th. Thank you to all who attended and made this event a great success! 👏 From Botond Roska's presentation, we learned that he and his lab have developed a two-photon imaging method using 3D acousto-optical microscopy to study the development of cortical circuits in living mouse embryos, revealing that Rbp4-Cre neurons form distinct, active, multi-layered circuits that switch configurations during embryonic development. Attila Losonczy has provided an overview of their recent efforts to investigate spatial and temporal rules of learning-related plasticity in the hippocampus of behaving mice using all-optical methods with 3D acousto-optical scanning for synaptic plasticity induction and read-out. Bradley Rauscher's lecture covered recent advances in neurophotonic technologies to study spontaneous neuronal and neurovascular activity in the mouse cerebral cortex, focusing on tools like two-photon imaging and optically transparent electrode arrays to understand neurovascular coupling and infer neuronal activity from noninvasive imaging signals. And finally, Balázs Rózsa presented 𝐌𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐮𝐬, a new immersive virtual reality platform enabling ~100-300-fold faster visual discriminative learning. He also revealed novel network mechanisms discovered during learning. 📢 He also introduced a groundbreaking development from BrainVisionCenter: the world's first 𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐋𝐘 𝐌𝐎𝐕𝐈𝐍𝐆 3𝐃 𝐌𝐈𝐂𝐑𝐎𝐒𝐂𝐎𝐏𝐄, which allows fast 3D acousto-optical scanning (>100 kHz/ROI) with high resolution in large scanning volumes, even in freely moving mice. 🔬

🔍 Breakthrough Discovery in Eye Neuroscience🔍 Researchers from North-Western Medicine have unveiled an innovative discovery in the retina: a novel subset of interneurons. As shared in their recent publication in Nature Communications, this advancement holds the potential to revolutionize our understanding of how the eye discerns objects, irrespective of lighting conditions. This revelation is shifting paradigms in ophthalmology and neuroscience, prompting us to rethink the internal dynamics of the eye. Dr. Yongling Zhu, the study's lead and an esteemed assistant professor specializing in Ophthalmology and Neuroscience, shines light on the magnitude of this discovery. Contrary to long-standing beliefs in the field, Zhu and her team have identified a new subtype of interneurons, named amacrine cells. Astonishingly, these cells can produce an "off" signal, even when situated in the "on" section of the synaptic layer.
