The North Carolina Biotechnology Center (NCBiotech) will again deploy our life sciences-based, innovation-focused statewide Venture Challenge to raise the profile, increase the volume, and enhance the success of life science commercialization, innovators, entrepreneurs, and companies in every region across North Carolina. Apply if you are a life sciences/biotech-related business venture related to a broad range of innovations and applications including agriculture, bioenergy, health/nutrition, advanced materials, industrial biotech, regenerative medicine, diagnostics, medical devices, biomanufacturing, biopharmaceuticals, technology, or marine biotech. Ventures must have a physical presence in a North Carolina county represented by an NCBiotech Center Regional Office: Eastern, Greater Charlotte, Southeastern, Piedmont Triad, Western. Great article! Congrats Widya Mulyasasmita, and it sparked a thought: It's no secret what the top 3 ingredients required for a startup to launch. Great ideas, talented people and sufficient capital. Ready to roll, right? Not so fast. Thought about the fourth ingredient? How about space! It's easy to see bright offices, nice conference rooms, cutting-edge labs, and great location. The right space is easy to get to, easy to get your work done, and easy to recruit talent, easy to host investors. Check those boxes and you're ready to sign, right? Not so fast. Savvy entrepreneurs will look a little longer for what hard to see, and pictures certainly can capture. They are asking questions like: Who are the neighboring entrepreneurs who can be sounding boards for their challenges? What events are held in-house to keep those fortuitous encounters and network healthy What investors/ vendors/ providers come to visit the space? It's easier if the world comes to the startup. And if the place is well-known that's brand capital an entrepreneur can leverage. Saying you're at a UC Berkeley incubator immediately gives you cred, far preferable than saying your in a converted warehouse in the industrial neighborhood. But this article sheds light on the idea that the right space will meaningfully improve a startup's chance for success. Sit with that for a moment. "Los Angeles County's Bioscience Industry Grows in Microclusters, Westside Biohub Shows Potential for Major Expansion" "The Los Angeles County bioscience industry is evolving into several microclusters, with key hubs including the 101 Biotech Corridor, Santa Clarita Valley, Westwood/Santa Monica, and the San Gabriel Valley. While these microclusters lack the scale of the Bay Area or San Diego, they are attracting significant venture capital. The region has nearly 50,000 bioscience jobs in 2022, with an average wage of $114,000. Many great scientific ideas don't get commercialized.... Not for lack of trying or lack of commercial potential but often times because of where they originate. A lot of academic institutions, where a good share of new therapeutic ideas or strategies start, are not truly equipped to help commercialize these potential drugs. Not to the fault of the institutions as drug discovery is a very complicated, risky and resource intensive endeavor. I also believe it to be more nuanced then other common startup sectors. Other institutions have good ecosystems for supporting the launch of new ideas while others simply attract VC given their name or status. What about all those universities that don't get looked at by VCs or founders with experience? Often those same ones don't have a robust ecosystem for launching new ideas and companies. How do we create incentives to get more ideas out of those institutions? Going back to yesterday's post, can we combine them with ideas from institutions with strong ecosystems or funding to create more value while also elevating that otherwise overlooked science? I am fortunate to be in one of the best biotech / drug discovery ecosystems in the world in Boston but not everyone is. #Biotech #Biopharma #DrugDiscovery #VentureCapital #Boston #Startup
