How to break into med device sales this summer (this is a repost from months ago but felt appropriate with recent grads and layoffs):
1. Hit the jobs tab on LinkedIn.
2. Type “associate sales representative” and filter by your city.
3. Scroll right to the company tab and type in 10-12 companies you’re interested in and add them all.
4. Start at the top of the list of job openings and scroll down to find the Job Poster and connect. If there isn’t one, keep scrolling to find Trending Employee Content to connect with employees as well as hit the Home Screen and search, for example, Smith and Nephew Sales Representative Los Angeles and connect with those reps in your city.
5. Connect with 10 medical sales recruiters, hiring managers, and VPs of Sales. Find them by typing their titles on the LinkedIn Search bar or google.
6. Message these job posters, hiring mgrs, sales reps, VPs and recruiters to say you’re interested in the ASR position open in your city and ask for a quick 5-min chat to discuss if you’d be a good fit for the role and offer two days and times. If you want to get even more advanced, try and secure a quick informational interview with a possible customer in the area and bring notes to hiring mgr.
7. While doing all this, continue to work on your selling skills (follow Doug Lotierzo and read any sales book) and presentation skills (Toastmasters) as well as keeping up with your physical and mental health.
Good luck and if you have other tips for folks wanting to break-in, please share!
