We are delighted to announce, alongside partners Rochdale Borough Council and Your Trust Rochdale, that work is now underway to bring to life five PlayZone facilities across Rochdale, thanks to a £1.35m grant from the Premier League, the FA, the government’s Football Foundation and local partnership funding. The funding will allow Rochdale AFC Community Trust to further deliver on its mission to make Rochdale a better place to live, work and play whilst providing fantastic facilities for the benefit of the community. The recent wildfires in Los Angeles have caused immense devastation, particularly impacting community centers that serve as vital lifelines for residents. The loss of the Palisades YMCA, a cornerstone of the community for 60 years, exemplifies the profound effect on local nonprofits. (Thanks for the post Mark Dengler. My thoughts are with you and everyone affected.) Community centers like the YMCA of the USA provide essential services and safe gathering spaces. Their destruction leaves significant voids in the support systems of affected neighborhoods. Places for People, Places Impact are supporting Broughton and Brooklands Community Connectors and Broughton Fields School to run their 'Lanterns of Hope' project.   We have awarded BBCC a Community Connector Grant to enable this community project organised by Broughton Fields Primary in collaboration with BBCC. The project will involve children, local groups and residents creating lanterns from mason jars, tissue paper, and LED lights, which will be displayed in windows across the neighbourhood.   Places for People have a large number of customers living and working within the Broughton and Brooklands area of Milton Keynes. Among the key demands: real rent control on all units, doubling Ontario Works and ODSP rates, and capping grocery prices. During the event, the local ACORN chapter elected its new board, with Monique Gordon as chair, Jason Laguerre as co-chair, and Rori Senior as secretary, signaling a strong commitment to community leadership. Etobicoke residents are standing up for change and proving that grassroots organizing works.

📣 The transformation of Great Harwood’s cherished Mercer Hall has reached an exciting new chapter, with £370,000 in funding now secured by Hyndburn Leisure to drive the next stage of its redevelopment. This includes £250,000 from the Community Ownership Fund and £120,000 in capital investment from the Council. The Legacy of Tun Tavern, Part II - Taverns served a vital role in the creation of the new American Republic. Researcher Baylen J. Linneken noted that taverns were “vital centers where colonists of reputations great and small gathered to read printed tracts, speak with each other on important issues of the day, debate the news, organize boycotts, draft treatises and demands, plot expulsion of their British overlords, and establish a new nation.” (Source: 2012, Baylen J. Linneken, Tavern Talk and the Origins of the Assembly Clause: Tracing the First Amendment’s Clause Back to Its Roots in Colonial Taverns. Hastings Constitutional Law Quarterly 39 (3):593-628.) Some argue that the right to assemble, codified in the First Amendment to the Constitution, was born out of colonial American taverns.   - Colonial taverns of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries were typically operated out of dwelling houses, which served multiple purposes. For this reason, tavern architecture did not conform to one particular style, but rather drew on vernacular architectural forms, and taverns were visually similar to other domestic and commercial buildings. Sandoval-Strausz, A Public House for a New Republic: The Architecture of Accommodation and the American State, 1789-1809. Perspectives in Vernacular Architecture 9:54-70).   - Built as one of the earliest taverns in Philadelphia, the Tun Tavern was likely expanded in the early eighteenth century. Thereafter, several social groups began to meet there, including the first Masonic group in Pennsylvania and three groups that assisted people moving to the colony from Europe – the St. George’s, St. Patrick’s, and St. Andrew’s societies. These are just a few of the details shared in the report. “The new historical study offers fresh insights that will inform efforts to preserve and interpret the Tun Tavern’s legacy,” said Pat Dailey, president and founder of the Tun Tavern Legacy Foundation. “By analyzing the tavern’s architectural features and comparing them to other colonial-era structures, the report provides recommendations for how a historically accurate reconstruction might look.” As the Tun Tavern Legacy Foundation shares details from this comprehensive study, it hopes to spark interest in rediscovering and celebrating this historic institution’s history. Day 4 of a #sharednarrative for #Plymouth: A city at the edge. We believe that viewing Plymouth as a city on the edge allows us to embrace our past, bringing it forward in a positive manner and tapping into the potential found in the transitional #liminal spaces - amidst our dialogue, between people, and between organisations. Exciting! At the edge geographically, at the edge of the ocean, the edge of the county, in the far south west of the country. Practically, at the edge of power and on the edge (including the forefront) of practice. At the edge of intersecting communities, it holds the strengths and tensions and benefits of being a military, university, and working class city all at once. Historically, it has been a valued friend to #power (see its naval history), a neglected friend (see the Plymouth blitz and its silencing) and also a rebellious enemy (see the Siege of Plymouth) of power. A city of many neighbourhoods, it hosts both prosperity and deprivation in differing forms - indeed, where there may not be material wealth there is often community wealth. Welcomeness, civic action, determination, grit and mutual support are a key part of the city’s social character. This is seen in POP’s membership of 380 active and diverse groups and that 26% of adult residents in Plymouth volunteer at least once per month. A recent report from the Minneapolis Fed sheds light on a promising trend that could mean great news for affordable housing. Findings from the report reveal that for every 100 new market-rate units, 70 vacancies open up in lower-income neighborhoods. Data from Detroit's Housing and Revitalization Department reveals since 2018, more than 2,000 housing units have been developed for diverse income levels, while more than 9,500 units have been "preserved" for our residents.
