Following our presentation to HRM's Community Planning and Economic Development Standing Committee (CPED) on behalf of the New Roots Community Land Trust (CLT) North End African Nova Scotian (ANS) Community, myself & Houssam Elokda had the privilege of being interviewed by Vanessa Wright with Global News to discuss the origins and urgency of our work. In my interview I discussed the origins of this work and emphasized its urgency. It’s crucial to act now to prevent further displacement of our community due to gentrification causing rising rental rates and extreme land dispossession in community. It's crucial to leverage this land to begin to rebuild the ANS communities that were lost in Cogswell and surrounding areas through Urban Renewal to help resident return to their previous status of working class, business and homeowners. titles that were lost by thousands of anus individuals through this process. The Trust intends to use funds generated from this initial development for the Community Land Trust (CLT) to acquire land in the North End and surrounding areas where historic ANS communities once lived and thrived; to restore and strengthen our community to its previous status. We hope this work, when competed, can serve as a blueprint for other communities to duplicate elsewhere to begin to develop their own sense of ownership and equity. The Wyn Carr House project in Fremantle, Western Australia, highlights the benefits of the private sector, government and the not-for-profit sector working together and the incredible impact of pro bono work in tackling Australia’s housing crisis and driving meaningful change. With well over $1m worth of support provided to date, and committed from 30 private business and organisations in the form of pro bono professional services and donated building materials and other goods, as well as $7 million in government funding, we have helped to unlock the redevelopment potential of an otherwise unused historic building into respectful transitional housing for women over 55 facing homelessness. Project owners, UnitingWA, will provide expert wrap-around services for future residents. Housing Help, and its Executive Director, Pilar Moya-Mancera, are disappointed with the Town of Southampton's decision to vote down the Liberty Gardens development and their lack of intent to address the shortage of affordable housing for the veterans and families who desperately need it. Southampton continues to embrace the NIMBY mentality, even after inviting a housing organization to address the housing crisis they agree exists. In contrast, neighboring East Hampton is moving in a positive direction by creating a Community Housing Fund and using it to establish a down payment assistance program and a grant initiative for community housing projects. MHIC is excited to announce the closing of Cheney Homes, a project led by Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation (JPNDC) to address the critical need for affordable senior housing in Jamaica Plain. With $13.9 million in LIHTC equity from our Social Impact Fund, $2 million in loan participation with Eastern Bank, and $500,000 from our Capital Magnet Fund, we are investing in a future where seniors can age in place within their community. Cheney Homes will offer 48 affordable apartments, along with a dedicated facility that provides essential resources and PACE support, fostering a welcoming environment for all residents. This project goes beyond housing; it’s about strengthening an economically diverse, resilient community where seniors thrive and contribute to the rich fabric of Jamaica Plain. This funding call is for gambling harm prevention, education, and support initiatives in First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities across Ontario.
