Belligerent or Problem-Solving? The world may never know. Circa 2002-204 (I don’t remember the details from 20-plus years ago, let alone what I had for breakfast yesterday) I was stationed in Kansas City, Missouri, at Marine Corps Reserve Support Command (MCRSC) from 2000-2004. During that time frame of 2002-2003, the unit was conducting military battle training in Fort Reily Kansas. Two weeks of standard military training, weapons qualifications, road marches (hiking with a 50-pound backpack), convoy training, and foot patrols. We slept underneath the stars for two weeks straight. The unit had previously signed off on my Officer Candidate School (OSC) package, and I was assigned the platoon commander for a group of my peers. (Leading your peers is one of the hardest things to do) During one of our movement-to-contact night patrols (movement contact is marching with weapons to engage the enemy combatants) We had crossed over various obstacles, and we approached a wooden wall on the trail. I determined to check for traps on the wall and could not find any. I instructed the platoon to move around the wall instead of going over. Was that being belligerent or problem-solving? The command Sgt Major had decided my decision during training was belligerent. The Sgt Major comes from a traditional Marine Corps structure where doing things by the book was the accepted norm, and to be successful in the military, you are not rewarded for stepping outside the norm. Now, you can’t apply that same mentality to running a small business or a not profit. You must be agile and ready for the constant changes. The same goes for separating and retiring from the military. I have been a problem solver for as long as I can remember; solving problems is one of my most vital traits. Be flexible and solve problems in your journey. #SocialSaturday #Transition #ProblemSolving

I would just note that while current USMC leadership may wish for Marines' "sell by date" to date to be fast and across the board. The reality in retail and in life is that such dates are subjective recommendations that are precautionarily conservative in comparison to the actual date when any real spoilage may occur. And if we are really being honest, the sell by date in many ways is a retail gimmick to keep products moving much quicker than they might were no such date posted on the product packaging. Max service ranging from 20-30 years depending on rank, is also arbitrary with little connection to the capabilities of the service member to continue serving and/or to offer critical strategic and intelectual insight, and more related to up and out policies to keep manpower tables flowing and asymmetrical without any pools or bubbles at any particular rank or grade. But HQMC is quick to dismiss the critical comments of retired officers by playing the retired card as if that is some type of sell by date for competence and capability.

Special Operations has always been a small part of the total military force. The question the author should be asking is how many woman are applying to infantry, armor and artillery slots since these fields were opened to women. These career field are much larger than those in Special Operations and would better reflect the total number of women in combat arms positions. My guess is that the number of women in combats arms positions is still exceptionally small. https://lnkd.in/e7dvqpbQ

Attention to fundamental principles is very crucial and important in every line of work. Most people that have worked so many years on a job rely on their "experience" and in a way ignore the very basic principles. A simple mistake can have a huge impact on one's work and life. You will know your simple mistake is serious if this happened - “Thank you for pointing out our rifle scope error in the previous post,” the Navy later wrote on social media. “Picture has been removed until EMI (extra military instruction) is completed.” No matter the years of experience one might have, do not ignore that very basic principle that shaped your experience.

One would think that the global demand for Armored Brigades would lead to the assumption that the U.S. either needs more Armored Brigades OR that those Brigades need to be stationed (with families) in the regions they are most likely required…. The U.S. will not build more Armored brigades: so what options are on the table to meet the requirements? In over 20 years the demand has not let up.

‘Your responsibility is to ensure each individual within your team is a master of their weapon. Your soldiers must be so ingrained with the drills that they automatically carry out the correct procedures without hesitation or error, day or night even when totally physically and mentally exhausted.’ - Junior Leadership on the Battlefield, Australian Army, 1990 At the School of Infantry, our soldiers conduct a comprehensive weapons training package that includes rifles, pistols, machine guns and high explosive weapons. This training leads up to the enhanced combat shooting course. During the combat shooting course, they learn advanced skills so that they can instinctively engage fleeting targets at short range, in conditions that replicate combat. Today, our soldiers are progressing in their training where they are learning to engage targets that appear in their peripheral vision, or at 90 degrees to their advance. This requires the soldier to identify the target, maintain awareness of their weapon and their team mates, bring their weapon to bear, accurately shoot the target and rectify any stoppages to their weapon. This may sound simple, but it requires concentration, situational awareness, and correct application of the drill. This training is designed so our soldiers are effective, under pressure, in conditions that will replicate combat. Under pressure, the cognitive load is significant, so practice and repetitions are critical to master these skills. Australian ArmyJason G. #infantry #DutyFirst #Singleton

It's excellent to see this article amplified by TRADOC. Junior Officers: Your perspective and insight is valuable. Being a junior officer is often compared to drinking from a fire house. Much of our institutional resources and scholarship focuses on field grade and above commanders and staff improvement. Most of the learning done by junior officers is on the job with little time to capture lessons until they abruptly switch positions or PCS. Further still, the vast majority of junior officers leave our Army having never codified what they learned - allowing many to make the same mistakes they made. The Center for Junior Officers is trying to change that.
#DYK there were three junior officers who wrote an article giving their perspective as TRADOC #OPFOR Soldiers and what it takes to win at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center? #JMRC, the Europe-based Combat Training Center, trains units with a specific emphasis on the European threat environment. These officers served in various 1-4 IN company and platoon positions and understand the complexities that training units face to deploy to a Combat Training Center. Read more about these junior officers' experience and their insight below! ⬇️ #VictoryStartsHere US Army | The Center for Junior Officers https://lnkd.in/e5yjYH3S
