Ahead of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science Day on Sunday 11th February, we are excited to introduce Dr. Belinda Cairns, Associate Director of Histopathology at Oxford BioTherapeutics. With an impressive 25-years’ experience in histopathology and tissue-based evaluation, Belinda has been an invaluable team member since joining Oxford BioTherapeutics in 2021. Belinda leads the evaluation of protein localisation between healthy and cancerous tissue for novel drug targets, producing critical data to advance targets into the developmental and clinical phases of drug development. She shares some insights from her experience: What inspires you about biotechnology? “Seeing a novel protein target that you’ve worked on become a drug in the clinic, helping people overcome disease and improving their quality of life, is both amazing and motivating. Inspired by my childhood love for Sherlock Holmes, I see biotechnology as a scientific whodunnit. We follow the data, identify, investigate, and understand novel proteins, and find optimal indications for innovative drug targets.” If you could go back and give advice to your younger self when starting your journey in STEM, what would it be? “For women starting in STEM, my key advice is to have confidence in yourself, trust in your abilities and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Challenges may seem overwhelming, but don't take them personally. Prioritize the project, embrace and value teamwork, and remember, you don't have to be an expert in every aspect of drug discovery - harness the expertise around you.” Join us in celebrating remarkable contributions from women involved in biotechnology and the rapidly advancing field of oncology. Let's continue to inspire and support more women and girls in science! #WomenInScience #BiotechnologyInnovation

We are Monash SynBio Tech (MSBT), Monash University's pioneering student team in synthetic biology. Our multidisciplinary team spans engineering, biomedical science, molecular biology, and beyond, working to translate fundamental research into clinical applications. Our unique blend of talents allows us to approach real-world challenges from diverse perspectives, bridging the gap between synthetic biology research and tangible impacts on clinicians and patients alike. Our primary 2023 project, the Monash Melanoma Multiplex (MMM), employs CRISPR-Cas13a technology to detect abnormal microRNA expression associated with melanoma, addressing a critical issue in Australia. We are currently in our initial experimental stage where we are assessing a panel of 7 microRNAs which are known to be dysregulated in melanoma and through the CRISPR-Cas 13 system we are measuring the concentrations of the microRNAs which will be quantified using fluorescent probes. At the Australasian SynBio Challenge (2023) in Canberra, we earned 'Crowd Favourite' recognition from academics and industry experts. We hope to continue with the project this year, and work towards translating our research into a point-of-care diagnostic tool to be used in healthcare settings. To expand our impact, we aim to enhance educational outreach, diversify projects, and join larger competitions, primarily the 2024 iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) competition. Through these endeavours, we aim to increase our presence and generate greater interest in synthetic biology, alongside exploring opportunities to collaborate with industry professionals. Please reach out to us if you are interested in collaborating with us! #MSBT #syntheticbiology #science #healthcare #collaboration #discovery #research

🌟 Excited to Share a Recent Small Achievement! 🌟 I’m thrilled to have earned a Certificate of Appreciation for placing 2nd in the Project Health Web 'Abstract 101' scientific abstract writing competition. This recognition is for my work on "Nanotechnology-Enhanced CRISPR/Cas9 Therapy: Approach to Regenerative Medicine." 🧬🔬 In my abstract, I explored the synergy between CRISPR/Cas9 technology and nanotechnology in regenerative medicine and cancer therapy. The integration of nanocarriers, such as lipids, nanoparticles, and polymers, plays a crucial role in enhancing the precision and effectiveness of gene editing by protecting CRISPR components and improving cellular uptake. This approach holds great promise not only in oncology but also in tackling global health challenges like antibiotic resistance. This experience has not only deepened my understanding of cutting-edge genetic engineering technologies but also contributed 7 research volunteer hours towards my ongoing commitment to advancing science. I’m grateful for this opportunity and excited to continue exploring the frontiers of regenerative medicine and genetic therapies. Thanks to the Project Health Web (Student Research Non-profit) team for organizing such an impactful competition! #ScientificResearch #GeneEditing #Biotech #Nanomedicine #STEM #Innovation #Healthcare #Genetics #TechInMedicine #MedicalBreakthrough #FutureOfMedicine #CancerResearch #GeneTherapy #MedTech #CRISPRRevolution #LifeSciences #BiomedicalEngineering #CellTherapy #ResearchInnovation #MedEd #ScienceCommunication

🧬 Did you know that...? Celebrating Biotechnology Day 🧬 Today, 16 June, we celebrate the International Biotechnology Day, which commemorates a historic milestone that revolutionised the world: in 1971, the research team led by Chakrabarty created a genetically engineered bacterial variant, Pseudomonas putida, capable of breaking down petroleum components. This laid the foundation stone for solving environmental problems that we all care so much about, but also opened the door to countless applications of the biotechnology in medicine. Nanoligent is fighting against cancer with an approach that combines biotechnology and chemotherapy: we develop drug-protein nanoconjugates for the targeted treatment of metastatic cancer cells that enable more effective and less invasive therapies. 🔬 Innovation at Nanoligent: We use innovative nanotechnology to improve the efficacy of cancer treatments through better targeting. Just as Chakrabarty used his ingenuity to change the landscape of his time, at Nanoligent we use our research to break new ground in personalised medicine. 🌐 Looking to the future / On the shoulders of giants: Revolutionizing personalized medicine by Nanotechnology. The great work of Chakrabarty and many who came before us allows us to design solutions that both treat patients and improve their quality of life. That is why Biotechnology Day is a day to celebrate all together 🎉🍾🎈. #BiotechDay #BiotechInnovation #Nanoligent #Cancer #Nanotechnology #BiotechnologyInHealth #CancerResearch
