Sunday Night Lights The Perseid meteor shower is expected to peak Sunday night into early morning Monday. During the annual event, which runs from July 14 to Sept. 1, some stargazers can expect to see up to 100 meteors per hour under optimal conditions. The popular celestial event, first recorded in 36 CE by Chinese observers, gets its name because the meteors appear to stream from the constellation of Perseus. In reality, the shower occurs when the Earth passes through the debris of the Swift-Tuttle comet. As the tiny particles, often no larger than grains of sand, enter the atmosphere at speeds averaging 37 miles per second, they burn up, creating bright streaks across the sky. This year brings favorable viewing conditions due to the moon being about 50% illuminated and setting around midnight, allowing for dark skies until dawn. The best viewing areas will be in clear, dark areas away from city lights; find a dark sky near you here https://lnkd.in/eSNj-qg5

🌌 Would you travel to space? 🚀 Space travel has become more accessible than ever. During Virgin Galactic’s recent visit to Singapore, Dr Anna Sabaté Garcia, Space Faculty's technical head had the opportunity to engage with them and Intriq Journey, where we discussed the latest developments in the space travel industry and how space benefits more than just a few individuals travelling to space. The advancements humanity has made in making life in space a reality are not just paving the way for space exploration – they’re creating significant benefits for life on Earth as well. With programmes such as the International Space Challenge, we encourage young minds to tackle Earth’s challenges using space as the ultimate test bed. Check out this insightful article by Siew Hua Lee in the The Straits Times and explore different perspectives on the future of space travel: https://lnkd.in/gju5Atjd #SpaceFaculty #SpaceFacultyAsia #ExperimentLearnLead #SpaceTravel #SpaceEconomy #Innovation #ISC #InternationalSpaceChallenge #ExS #ExpandSpace

This explains why even in the underwater domain the presence of feature-poor areas (along with adverse visibility conditions) is one of the main factors complicating the realisation of robust and reliable visual odometry solutions.

The “Overview Effect” is a cognitive shift that affects some astronauts when they see the earth from space… Many say they no longer identify with a specific nationality or culture after seeing earth from outer space, instead they see themselves, and all citizens on earth, as one people, living on one world… The Overview Effect has been documented by numerous astronauts and cosmonauts, who describe seeing the Earth from in space first-hand like seeing “a tiny, fragile ball of life hanging in the void, shielded and nourished by a paper-thin atmosphere.” From space, astronauts cannot see physical borderlines or national boundaries, all evidence of division and separateness vanishes… The conflicts that divide countries, cultures and people become less important, and the need to create a peaceful united planetary society, which works together to protect this “pale blue dot,” becomes critical… Joanna Macy, a philosopher and ecologist featured in “Planetary,” says you don’t have to go to space to experience the Overview Effect, you don’t have to be an astronaut… You can feel it just by closely studying an image of earth from space… “When you study images of earth… you’re struck with such a gladness at that beauty and the originality of it, that you don’t have time to think about how is it going to turn out… All you know is you’ll serve it… to the last breath.” 🙏🕊️💙🌎🌍🌏💙🕊️🙏 Captured by astronauts Sergey Ryazanskiy, Paolo Nespoli, and commander Randy Bresnik, the video features stunning footage of earth and outer space from the International Space Station in low earth orbit; sharing the incomparable silent beauty of our planet with us, the travelers on “Spaceship EARTH” 🌎🌍 For more on the international space station visit👇 www.nasa.gov/station https://lnkd.in/dnMYjj9h

A Neptune-like planet has been discovered in the habitable zone of a binary star system, thanks to the efforts of citizen scientists. This discovery sheds light on planetary formation and stability in multi-star systems. The discovery of TOI 4633 c marks a significant milestone in the field of astronomy, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts between professional scientists and citizen scientists. The Neptune-like exoplanet was identified through the transit method, where the planet crosses in front of its host star, causing a temporary dimming of the star’s light. The transit method is typically used to identify planets with tight orbits, as they frequently pass between Earth and their host star, blocking light more often. However, TOI 4633 c is unusual due to its long orbit of 272 days. This makes it one of the few long-orbit planets discovered using TESS data.

Inspired by the recent Odysseus Spacecraft Moon landing, here's an exciting warm-up activity for all science teachers out there! Set up an imaginary scenario for your students - ask them to imagine that they are colonizing the moon or another planet like Mars and need to grow their food because they are stranded and their food reserve will only last for 50 days. Then ask them to predict what kind of foods they would grow and what kind of questions would they ask to grow their food. To help them refine their answers, show them this video of this astronaut (played by Matt Damon) stranded on Mars. It's an excellent resource that will help them understand and start thinking about how plants produce their food. Great introduction to photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Let's inspire our students to think critically and creatively about space colonization and the science behind it. Share this activity with your class today and let the learning begin! #spacecolonization #moonmission #marsexploration #scienceeducation #stemlearning #spacefood #plantgrowth #photosynthesis #criticalthinking #futureexplorers #spacescience #creativelearning #scienceclass #inquirybasedlearning #problemsolving #inquirybasedlearning #problemsolvingskills #itistimetoinnovate
