Think places like Okinawa in Japan or Sardinia in Italy and most recently the Republic of Singapore in Southeastern Asia. Could Connecticut be next? Is your community a good candidate? Key Ingredients for a Blue Zone: Healthy Diet: Think Mediterranean or plant-based diets rich in whole foods. Regular Exercise: Daily physical activity is a must, whether it's walking, gardening, or yoga. Strong Community: Building supportive social networks is crucial for mental and emotional well-being. Purposeful Living: Having a reason to get up in the morning can add years to your life. Stress Reduction: Practices like meditation, relaxation, and spending time in nature. How Can We Make Connecticut a Blue Zone? Promote Healthy Eating: Encourage local farmers' markets and community gardens. Encourage Active Living: Invest in parks, walking trails, and bike lanes. The combination of darker evenings, wintry showers and preparation for the festive season can make it all the harder to fit in some physical activity, but as tempting as it may be to stay curled up on the sofa, that won't help to maintain your energy and wellbing over the holiday season. Another highly beneficial routine to add to your lifestyle for your health and wellbeing is Grounding. In modern society and infrastructure we have completely lost our connection to nature and it’s core. We walk on concrete and spend most of our time indoors. Gardens are even being wiped out in place of concrete or artificial grass for convenience. We are energy. Nature is energy. We are meant to be interconnected and nature is all around us for our benefit but how much do we utilise this power? How connected are you to nature and it’s energy? It’s there to help and energise and importantly heal us. Grounding has so many health and energy benefits. Recently I’ve been making a more conscious effort to more frequently add grounding to my daily lifestyle. I know it won’t be long until it becomes one of my daily lifestyle non negotiables. My advice is to do your best to walk barefoot in grass and/or on sand at the beach if an option for you. If the latter is then also make sure to walk/swim in the ocean and gain all the benefits of that part of nature. Like I said nature is there for our benefit. Outdoor Wellbeing and fulfilment. My top tips from "The Outdoor Fix" by Liv Bolton; which includes lots of fabulous people's stories about making the outdoors a bigger part of your everyday life in really simple ways: 1. What's so important that you can't just go outside for ten minutes? (Sophie Pavelle) 2. If you have kids then climb the tree with them! 3. Use free apps to identify wildlife and plants. The three activities I am building into my life to ensure I am present and engaged with my time outdoors: 1. Walk different route each day for at least 30 minutes and do it mindfully. 2. Push through introversion to connect to others in the outdoors through the myriad of outdoor social groups in the UK. 3. Be curious! On hearing a noise in the undergrowth or the canopy; stop, be quiet and use inexpensive binoculars or camera zoom to appreciate what surrounds us. What three things would expand your enjoyment of the outdoors... and it's always to start today!
