The Element by Westin Bali Ubud at The Westin Resort & Spa Ubud, Bali has achieved their commitments to eliminate 100% of single-use plastics from rooms and food & beverage areas. While I’m loudly applauding this, I’m wondering if they also eliminated drinks packaged in single-use glass bottles and cans. It would be far better to provide drinking water in refillable glass bottles rather than any type of single-use container. While it’s true that aluminum cans have a high price on the recycling market, they are generally lined in plastic. @Bintang Beer will pay for return of their glass bottles, but this is not the case with wine, water or sweet drinks packaged in glass bottles. We can not return those glass bottles to the drink producers for a fee. We see them being dumped or going to landfill. Indonesian Waste Platform collects post-consumer glass wine and drink bottles from hotels and liveaboards in #LabuanBajo and then we repurpose them into drink glasses and/or building material such as wall filler or aggregate for cement. The cost of repurposing requires machines which run on electricity to cut, polish and crush. Hence it only makes sense to collect the bottles if we have a building project or if there are buyers of the glassware and aggregate willing to cover the cost of collection and processing. I also wonder how the hotel provides their packaged coffee and tea provided in each room. More applause for The Westin. They have also adopted a farm-to-table approach at their restaurant, Andong Teras. This is awesome. Even better would be to source mainly organic produce and minimize food waste. They do use organic products at their spa. In Spain, protesters spray tourists with squirt guns, while 50,000 take to the streets on the island of Mallorca to promote an "alternative tourism model." Juneau, Alaska, is considering banning cruise ships on Saturdays, while Japan is limiting tourists in Kyoto and installed a barrier blocking a view of Mt. Fuji that had been overrun with tourists. In Italy, where a tourist made news last week for some lewd acts involving an ancient statue, numerous cities and regions are imposing tourism limits: Venice, Cinque Terre, Agrigento in Sicily (it's running out of water). In most of these destinations, leaders are quick to point out that they don't want to end tourism, they just want to be smarter about it and preserve the very elements that are drive visitation in the first place. "It’s about preserving the lifestyle that keeps us in Juneau, which is about clean air, clean water, pristine environment and easy access to trails, easy access to water sports and nature," said Deborah Craig, a Juneau resident. "There’s this perception that some people are not welcoming of tourists, and that’s not the case at all. It’s about volume. It’s about too much — too many in a short period of time overwhelming a small community." Enter regenerative tourism. The focus of regenerative tourism goes beyond just limiting negative impact on a destination, instead aiming to leave a net positive impact. It's about using tourism to improve local environments, cultures, communities, businesses, and people. What does it look like? In Tasmania, local restaurant Timbre Kitchen is spearheading one idea: letting locals barter the produce they grow for free meals. "Community members and small-scale growers from the greater Launceston area bring armfuls of home-grown produce to the restaurant in exchange for dining vouchers, which allows them to eat their own produce completely re-imagined for the plate." Sourcing locally supports the local community, which attracts tourists interested in the program, which aids the effort monetarily. These are the types of ideas that cause some to say, "Well you can't do that at scale." But there's value in spearheading new, inventive programs and policies in order to learn from them, possibly reproduce elements in other contexts, and create a culture that embraces risk taking and innovation overall. As Timbre Kitchen shows, the food industry has an essential role and voice in what sustainable tourism can and should look like in the future.
