Most skilled maintainers, after graduating from a vo-tech post-secondary school can start at $35-$45K+, and reach $70k-$85K, with some OT, within less than 5 years; not bad for a twenty-something guy/gal wanting to start a family. Many leaders in the field service sector lament about the lack of personnel to fulfill current openings, but there are many opportunities to attract young talent, and one of them is sponsoring such activities.
