Had a great first day yesterday at the FT Live Future of the Car event! 🚗 My key take aways from day one include … 🔌 Everyone’s Talking About EVs!: It’s clear the shift from ICE to EVs is speeding up, but not without challenges. EVs are now more accessible than ever but more needs to be done to achieve the UK government targets. 🤝 Strategic Partnerships Are Key: The importance of collaboration between OEMs, tech firms and other industry players was a major theme and these partnerships will ensure we can meet the demands of modern consumers. From EV battery solutions to the integration of advanced technologies, AI and connected services - the ability to draw upon expertise in these areas will support a truly tech-driven car. 🌏 Chinese Entrants Are Changing The Game: The event highlighted the competitive threat that Chinese manufacturers bring with more competitively priced vehicles. Not only do European manufacturers need to innovate faster, they need to consider incentives to make their range more competitive to EV consumers. 🔄 A Shift From Ownership to Usership: The car ownership model is evolving, but it’s not as black and white as full ownership vs pay-to-drive propositions. More people are opting for flexible usership, including short-term leases and full-service packages, reflecting a major change in how we think about mobility. 📈 Flexibility In Policy Is Needed: Despite a clear direction of travel from the UK government, many of yesterday’s talks highlighted the need for flexible policies and responsive strategies to adapt to these rapid changes and make it work for everyone.
