Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a type of cancer that forms in the bile ducts, and can occur anywhere along the bile ducts, both within the liver (intrahepatic) and outside the liver (extrahepatic). Traditional methods have limitations in visualizing the full extent of CCA. Our innovative approach using internal receivers for intraductal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with T2 mapping has the potential to change the game! What makes it so special? 🌟 Last Monday I attended to a talk on the Results of the MACACO Compton Camera for Proton Therapy and its Evaluation for Radiotracers Imaging! 📡 🔍 Key Takeaways: MACACO Compton Camera: Developed by the IRIS group, this prototype utilizes Lanthanum (III) bromide scintillator crystals coupled with silicon photomultipliers. Hadron Therapy Basics: Comprehensive overview of hadron therapy and the underlying physics of Compton cameras. Proton Therapy Advancements: Detailed presentation of the camera's design and its application in monitoring proton therapy treatments. Radiotracer Imaging: Evaluation of the camera's effectiveness in imaging medical radiotracers, showing promising results from tests conducted at proton therapy centers and hospitals. Ongoing Improvements: Current experimental enhancements aimed at boosting the performance of the prototype for broader medical applications. The talk highlighted significant advancements in medical imaging technology, showcasing the potential of the MACACO Compton Camera to revolutionize both therapeutic and diagnostic processes in oncology. The discussion on its feasibility for medical applications was particularly enlightening, emphasizing the critical role of precision in cancer treatment. Even withouth being an expert on this, the talk was clear and I enjoyed it a lot! This is part of an enormous effort that it is being done at IFIC in order to develop research in both Cancer tratment and Medical Imaging. Our review article about fast Monte Carlo based dose calculation in proton therapy has been published in PMB. This article examines the critical role of fast Monte Carlo dose calculations in advancing proton therapy techniques, particularly in the context of increasing treatment customization and precision. As adaptive radiotherapy and other patient-specific approaches evolve, the need for accurate and precise dose calculations, essential for techniques like proton-based stereotactic radiosurgery, becomes more prominent. These calculations, however, are time-intensive, with the treatment planning/optimization process constrained by the achievable speed of dose computations. Thus, enhancing the speed of Monte Carlo methods is vital, as it not only facilitates the implementation of novel treatment modalities but also leads to more optimal treatment plans. #protontherapy #cancerresearch #montecarlo https://lnkd.in/gjaAhNnq

📢 New paper alert 📢 I am excited to share that we have taken a next step in expanding the applicability of our radiation-sensitive ultrasound contrast agents towards conventional photon radiotherapy, eventually aiming for safer and more effective radiotherapy treatments. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eB9RVP7P In particular, by dispersing superheated nanodroplets in gel phantoms and irradiating them with clinical photon beams at various temperatures, we were able to demonstrate their sensitivity to both photoneutrons (at elevated photon energies >8 MV) and secondary electrons. Moreover, the use of online high-frame rate ultrasound imaging allowed to detect and localize individual vaporization events, outperforming conventional grey value read-outs. Unfortunately, limited reproducibility (likely related to the suboptimal nanodroplet formulation) prevented to extract reliable dose-response relationships. Yet, we hope that our results can spark the interest in the development of more suitable nanodroplet formulations for (in vivo) radiation sensing & related theranostic applications.
