How The Latest AI Tools Can Revolutionize Education for Language Learners Technology is transforming language learning. The new conversational features in AI are leading this change, offering exciting benefits for students, especially those learning English. Here are four game changing benefits. 1. Real-Time Conversations and Feedback Traditionally, language learners relied on textbooks and structured classroom dialogues, but now students can engage in real-time conversations that feel natural and dynamic. The AI provides instant feedback and corrections, helping students understand and correct their mistakes immediately. The development of AI that can understand and speak with tone is the beginning of something big for having conversations. 2. Personalized Conversational Practice In the past, personalized learning was limited to one-on-one tutoring, which could be costly and inaccessible for many students. Now personalized conversational practice can be tailored to each student's level and learning style. It is gratifying when your research makes a significant impact (please excuse my lack of cautious language here!) on your field of interest and is cited in a recognized journal (The Journal of Asia TEFL). Some quick references made by a recent Asia TEFL article to my 2019 article, "From Cognition, Metacognition to Autonomy: A Framework for Understanding Language Learning Dynamics," published in the Arab World English Journal, Special Issue, 207–222, https://lnkd.in/gke_22i9, include: "Through the use of metacognition, language learners are able to monitor their cognitive processes (Haque, 2019). The final goal of any language learning is autonomy (Haque, 2019) ..." (p. 19). "However, autonomy is not something that students can always acquire effortlessly; rather, as Haque (2019) argues, it develops over time as they gain knowledge and skills" (p. 20). "Consequently, when language learners utilize metacognition, they commence efficiently monitoring their language learning and developing their autonomy in the process of learning (Haque, 2019)" (p. 20). Today I delivered a webinar for around 40 Heads of Languages at United Learning in the UK on 'Adapting New Technologies to Empower Modern Language Teaching, Learning and Assessment'. I covered a range of practical AI tools and techniques that can save teachers time while enhancing students' language acquisition. I began by demonstrating Mizou, a free educational chatbot that allows students to practise speaking and listening through roleplaying conversations. Teachers can easily create chatbots for scenarios like ordering at a French café, tailoring the difficulty level and providing feedback. Next, I showed Voice Control for ChatGPT - a Chrome extension enabling voice input for ChatGPT's conversational abilities. Students can practise speaking by roleplaying with the AI in the target language. I also highlighted the Canned Replies extension for saving frequent ChatGPT prompts. Audio Pen is a handy transcription tool. Students can record themselves speaking, and it will transcribe and summarise their speech - useful for assessing speaking skills or taking meeting notes. I then covered Diffit, which can generate reading texts at different levels for differentiation, complete with comprehension questions and activities. For the writing and speaking skills, I demonstrated Padlet's 'I Can't Draw' feature to create images from text descriptions, and Blockade Labs for generating 360° landscape images - great for creative writing prompts or photo card practice. Finally, Quizizz AI integrates with YouTube to automatically produce multiple-choice quiz questions from video transcripts. Throughout, I emphasised the importance of checking AI outputs for accuracy, bias and hallucinations. I also mentioned my Facebook group 'Language Teaching with AI' now has over 3,700 members sharing resources and advice. My online CPD courses cover using AI like ChatGPT in depth for language teachers too. Overall, I aimed to show how embracing AI can save time while empowering more engaging, personalised language learning experiences. Yes! Using AI requires making informed choices about what we communicate and how we communicate. To do this requires language skills and cultural skills… sociolinguistic and pragmatic skills. It’s not just a foreign language class, it’s a communication class. A class that strengthens our society by improving communication, which leads to stronger communities…with humans.

AI Is Coming for Language Learning - Are We Ready? 🤖 This Atlantic article shows how AI can now create deepfake videos of people speaking new languages fluently from just one photo. While impressive, it raises concerns as it suggests that enrolments in language courses are plummeting due to convenient AI translation tools. The article argues that AI still struggles with the nuances and cultural context that human translators excel at and suggests that we as educators should be focusing on teaching intercultural competence - the value AI cannot replicate. I attended the Language Leaders AI Summit last week, on March 27. By no means am I an AI specialist but it is impossible to turn a blind eye to the revolution it has been causing in every field of human knowledge - so there I was and here's a few things that caught my attention. It became crystal clear to me that even if there may take some time for AI to change the way languages are taught, it is already changing the way they are learnt. As those of us who have been in the field of language teaching long enough know very well, teaching tends to adapt to learning (and sometimes it takes too long to catch up...). So my main interest focused on the teaching perspective and I found out that there are some very interesting things going on for language teachers. There are AI-powered platforms that have found interesting and useful ways to simplify teachers' lives. For example, by transforming long, complex prompts into buttons that teachers can press to choose, for example, if they want to create a multiple-choice or a gapfill activity. AI can record lessons and transform the recording into a summary of the main points of the lesson that the teacher can share with learners. AI analyzes vast amounts of learner data to identify patterns, preferences, and areas for improvement. This is extremely helpful for educators to use to tailor instructional strategies (I particularly liked the term "hyperpersonalise content"), track learner progress, and optimize curriculum design, fostering more effective language learning outcomes. Changes are happening every second so it is pointless to pretend "we still have time" to adapt. This time, it seems, teaching will have to catch up with learning far faster than it's used to...

"It's just a matter of time when artificial intelligence will replace us as teachers of foreign languages." Well, I disagree. While it is true that AI can be a great tool to support language learning, nothing beats the knowledge and expertise of a teacher.
