We’re now officially a London Living Wage Employer.
As I stated in our Crowdcube update last week about B-Corp (https://lnkd.in/etxghX-C) at Serious Pig we believe in doing things properly and fairly.
Being based in London has lots of advantages but it’s expensive too. We haggle where we can with rent and utilities, but we won’t haggle with our staff on pay and we are now officially committed to paying a fair minimum wage of £13.15/hour – The London Living Wage.
Here’s some information from the Living Wage Foundation:
What are the business benefits of paying the real Living Wage?
Paying a real Living Wage improves the employer brand, boosts staff productivity and motivation at work.
We also know paying a real Living Wage helps employers to remain competitive, retain existing staff and attract new staff. Over half of employers said paying a real Living Wage has improved the quality of applications for jobs.
Over a third of employers also reported that the Living Wage helped the organisation secure contracts and funding.
I hope you agree with me that this accreditation is right and proper for Serious Pig and all its stakeholders.

Where are all the Chief Operations Officers (COOs)?
Do only 25% of organizations have COOs because there are so few COOs expert in their role?
There are over 165,000 non-Manufactuing and non-public sector (in other words, service and knowledge-work organisations) in Ireland and only 1,400 COOs listed as members on LinkedIn and only 1,100 listed in organisations with more than 50 people. Even allowing for LinkedIn not having all COOs as members, and that 97.4% of business (4,290) have less than 50 people, only 26% of organisations over 50 people and outside of manufacturing, have COO's.

What encouraged me to seek out these statistics is that, in the salary survey compiled by Sigmar Recruitment, a highly respected multinational recruitment agency based in Ireland (see below), the role of COO doesn't exist in their annual salary survey and the nearest (Director of Operations or Head of Operations) only exists in the Financial and Life Sciences sectors.
In their recent McKinsey publication:
"Stepping up: What COOs will need to succeed in 2023 and beyond."
https://lnkd.in/e_kk9_ye
They make the point that:
"How many of us can name a famous COO? The role of the COO was low profile to begin with, and in the early 2000s, a trend toward flatter organizations and more hands-on CEOs took hold. In 2000, 48 percent of Fortune 500 and S&P 500 companies had a COO by 2018, that number had dropped to an all-time low of 32 percent."
"But COOs are making a comeback. As of 2022, 40 percent of leading companies had a COO, with the financial and energy sectors leading the way at 48 percent. Furthermore, the role itself has changed—it’s bigger, bolder, and more transformative than ever. "
"In an uncertain post pandemic environment, the COO role is evolving from its roots in the back office into a catalyst for technology-driven growth, strategic expansion, and employee empowerment. As chief executives increasingly become the public face of organizations and deal with external constituencies and stakeholders, it often falls to COOs to provide internal leadership and direction. And as operations face extraordinary disruptions, COOs are now key players in boosting organizational resilience and value creation. As such, they are often leading contenders for the top job: in 2021, nearly 27 percent of CEOs in Fortune 500 and S&P 500 companies were promoted from the COO role, more than from any other internal position."
At Expertivity Technologies we help COOs develop the full suite of skills and competencies required to maximise their potential and that of their organisation.

Many companies are talking about the National Minimum Wage and how it affects their costs.
The reason it's on the agenda is of course because the new rates of the National Living Wage and National Minimum Wage come into force from April 1, 2024.
When it committed to the increase, the Government said it “accepted in full the recommendations” of the Low Pay Commission.
So, as an example, the NMW for people 21 and over will be £11.44, an increase of £1.02 (9.8%).
Some see the rise as the right thing to do, while some businesses think it will add yet more cost in an already tough trading environment.
The wage increase is law, so it has to be adhered to, but businesses should be looking at and reviewing their salary structures as a matter of course.
The inherent problem though is whether or not they know what salaries their competitors are paying.
Knowing this sort of information is invaluable when it comes to staff retention and recruitment.
That’s where we can come in.
Because we talk to many companies in many sectors, we know exactly what types of salaries and incentives packages are being put together.
We’ve even put together a 2024 Salary Guide, packed with information!!
Of course, we can’t tell you exactly what individual companies are paying, but we can give you a strong indication of the salary brackets for specific roles across various industries.
This type of market intelligence could be critical in helping you retain or recruit the right talent.
And if you could get hold of it, you would, wouldn’t you?
