Ticks can be more than just a nuisance — they can carry diseases such as Lyme disease, anaplasmosis and babesiosis. Here are some tips to help protect you and your loved ones while enjoying nature: > Protective clothing: Opt for long sleeves, pants and light-coloured clothing to spot ticks easily > Tick repellent: Apply insect repellent containing DEET or icaridin on exposed skin and clothing > Stay on trails: Avoid tall grass, leaf litter and wooded areas when possible > Check for ticks: After spending time outdoors inspect your body, clothing and pets for ticks - pay special attention to hidden areas like underarms, behind knees and hairlines > Shower soon after being outdoors: Showering within 2 hours of being outdoors can help remove unattached ticks > Proper tick removal: Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin’s surface as possible and pull upward steadily - clean the area with soap and water afterward > Monitor for symptoms: If you develop a rash or fever after a tick bite, seek medical attention promptly.
