A new software category has finally matured: Residential HVAC Commissioning! Up until recently, residential HVAC systems were designed to handle sub-optimal configurations - sacrificing efficiency for ease-of-installation and compatibility. This meant that residential systems only had to be INSTALLED, and not COMMISSIONED. What is commissioning? Here's the DOE's explanation: "Commissioning is the process of thoroughly verifying and proving that building systems are installed and operating according to the criteria in the original design and engineering documentation" While commissioning is common in commercial systems, it's not been adopted in residential systems because the process was too complex and time consuming - the risks didn't outweigh the reward. Through the recent advancements in regulations, efficiency demands, and technology - that is no longer the case! To achieve true commissioning, the performance of a system must be bench-marked against the original DESIGN of a system. Currently, most residential systems are not designed due to a lack of time, skill, and incentive for HVAC companies to do so. Luckily, a sister category to residential commissioning is also maturing - Residential Design Software! By reducing the friction required to achieve an outcome while also increasing the incentives, we can accelerate behavior changes within a market. To that end, the next few years will see a renaissance in the residential HVAC industry: - Some states and provinces may soon require digital proof of commissioning (and design) before distributing cash for incentive programs. - Residential HVAC Designs will soon become effortless through platforms like Conduit Tech combined with public datasets (real estate, satelite) and private datasets (smart thermostat data logging). - Leading residential manufacturers like Daikin Comfort are building commissioning processes into their proprietary hardware and software. - The alliance between Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA)and measureQuick already allows ANY HVAC company to automate the commissioning process for ANY system, and even automatically generate Quality Installation Certificates for the homeowners. - Manual commissioning can be streamlined through software like XOi or the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Open Source commissioning tool.
