Here’s me in the middle of an African safari park, very grateful to be sitting in a Land Rover and not standing on foot. In five days here, what did I learn?
I just got back from the experience of a lifetime, where I was so grateful to be guided through a South African safari park as part of a coaching retreat.
And let me tell you, I learnt even more than I thought I would (and most of it was unexpected):
☀ I learnt to track with my heart, not just my head.
So much of life is cerebral. We think it through, usually so much that we disconnect from how things feel. But while I was being taught how to track animals through the bush, I was told, “use your heart and your gut, not your head”, and it was the only way I could hold onto the trail.
☀I learnt how powerful community is.
Getting to spend this time with a close-knit group of other wayfinders was so incredible, and it reminded me of how grateful I am for all the other people who have ever touched my life. We all underestimate the impact we have on one another, but it’s really in our memories of others that our lives are made.
☀I learnt that newness is tough, but stagnation is worse.
Going somewhere new and doing all sorts of experiences in such a short time frame was a little exhausting, but in the best way. The nerves of getting outside your comfort zone let you know you’re doing the right thing. They’re a signal of growth, and we should follow those nerves when we can.
Most of all, I remembered how grateful I am for making the change to life and career coaching all those years ago. Without it, I might have never made it here.
If you’re interested, I wrote about one of the strongest memories from my time there, and the biggest lesson it’s taught me about finding purpose in life and career. The link is in the comments if you’d like to have a read.
Remember, when it comes to purpose, lead with your heart. It has better eyes than your head (and twice the staying power).
You’ve got this.
