Major disruption is needed in talent management pipelines. Assessment of prior learning and work experience, as well as credit for prior learning, cannot be ignored. Talent pipelines may seem foolproof, but we all know what happens when pipes break or crack. It's a commitment across the continuum, starting with learning and development. However, the current conditions are highly inequitable and operate on a rank and sort system. Let's work to create a more equitable system for all. Why is that? Because when listening to a story the listener generates mental images, followed by personal deductions and predictions, which again creates feelings. The listener becomes involved and engaged in the story, and it is when we feel involved and engaged that we remember what we are listening to. And what is better than students who remember what they learn? It is good for the self-esteem of the teacher and it is good for the study results of the student – a true win – win situation. In the EUVECA project we have as objective to teach the 21st century skills. But what are these skills about? It is e.g. the ability to be creative, to think critically, to wonder and ask questions, to collaborate and communicate in order to solve problems and to have a multidisciplinary approach to the daily work. 🎤 Storytelling as a teaching approach is a very interesting tool that goes beyond facts and figures and actually activates the students in a way that helps them to engage in what happens in the story and apply the 21st century skills when needed. You can bring in as many new nurses as you want. But if you have outdated nurses teaching them, and new nurses orienting them and place them in toxic unsafe work cultures, you will just keep losing them. Professionalism is gone. Assessment skills are gone. Patients know they are in the hands of someone who has no idea what they are doing, which makes them terrified and they become violent. No amount of free college is worth what we are seeing out here. It’s like people are saying, oh yeah there’s a nursing shortage let’s train more nurses! But don’t listen to us seasoned nurses when we are telling you, it’s not us just complaining. It’s bad. It’s really really terrible. As a 15 year seasoned trauma nurse I should not be crying on my way home because I felt so frustrated by what I see each shift. You train more inexperienced nurses and the rate of nurses leaving in the first year just keeps getting higher. Maybe the issue is not the funding and lack of training, but the poor training and lack of safe workplaces? Funnels only work if they aren’t full of giant holes. #nursesonlinkedin #healthcare #professionalism

This! Get back to technical HS programs even for med students to streamline education. Trim the excess in academia and get to the legitimate coursework and training. The model where med/nursing students are trained as EMTs and techs upfront to learn patient management throughout med programming makes for some wise and confident practitioners. Learning medical care in real time, hands on needn’t be delayed.

Our nurses are increasingly expected and assumed to be literate with digital devices. Often, this is without additional support or training to ensure that staff are comfortable and confident to do their job. Organisations such as Robert Gordan University are tackling this issue by ensuring that nursing students are given digital skills support prior to registration. This helps to meet the increasing technological expectations of our nursing staff and it is a positive example for other universities and organisations https://lnkd.in/erQnifeq
