Principal Instructor at University of Colorado, Boulder, Founder, Construction-Education, and Principal Training Specialist at Safety Function
Summer has arrived and newbies are joining your projects. Go back in time and recall your first days in construction. The jobsite looks and sounds chaotic. The jargon used on site sounds like a foreign language. Here is a recent quote from a young field engineer - "As a novice in the industry, I felt an overall uncertainty about all the details. I had to learn on the fly - leaving me quietly Googling terms or asking embarrassing questions to my superintendent." We're asking new interns and engineers to navigate a complex construction environment while also performing important tasks. For the sake of safety, production, quality and all the other critical factors on a project, put yourself in their shoes and take time to train and orient your new folks this summer. If you're looking for time-tested resources, Construction-Education can help.

#Thankful for Professional Development at Fuss & O’Neill In any professional services area, but especially in resilience and sustainability, continuous learning is not just a choice; it's an imperative as technology, methods, policies, programs and regulations are rapidly evolving. That's why this Thanksgiving week, I'm sharing that I'm thankful for the emphasis Fuss & O'Neill places on professional development. From providing access to industry-leading training programs and conferences, to providing tuition reimbursement, and encouraging internal knowledge sharing initiatives like our Nature-Based Solutions, Resilient Roads, and Active Transportation interest groups, Fuss & O’Neill genuinely invests in its employees' professional growth. The opportunities I've had to expand my skillset, deepen my knowledge, and explore new areas of expertise have been instrumental in my ability to advance my own career and our work company-wide work in resilience and sustainability. For example, this semester I’m learning about life cycle assessment (#LCA) at Harvard Extension School and my final project will be comparing the LCA impacts of green stormwater infrastructure installations, an analysis aligned with the growing emphasis on understanding the true GHG impacts of projects over their entire life cycle, not just during their operational phase. The support I’ve received exemplifies our forward-looking and employee-centered approach to PD. By investing in PD, Fuss & O’Neill is not only investing in our individual success but also in the collective success of our organization. If you are considering a new opportunity and this appeals to you, message me or check out our career page to learn more about the job opportunities available across the organization. The Profit Protector ~ Construction Specialist ~ Commercial Property & Casualty Insurance ~ Risk Management
Important Reminder for Construction Managers: Train Summer Interns on Safety Protocols With summer fast approaching, many young individuals are excited to join the construction industry, eager to gain valuable experience, earn good money, and meet new people. However, their enthusiasm brings a greater responsibility for us to ensure their safety on the job site. Due to their lack of experience, summer interns face a higher risk of injury. Properly training these new employees is not only critical to their well-being but also essential for maintaining a productive and safe workforce. Why It Matters: Protect Your Team: Ensuring that interns are well-trained reduces the likelihood of accidents, keeping everyone on the jobsite safe. Maintain Productivity: A safe work environment fosters efficiency and ensures that projects stay on track. Preserve Your Reputation: Injuries can have a significant impact on your company’s profits, morale, and reputation. Demonstrating a commitment to safety reflects well on your business. Action Required: Don’t wait until it’s too late. Take proactive steps to regularly review and enforce safety protocols with all employees, especially summer interns. Make safety training a priority to safeguard your team and your business. Let’s work together to create a safe and productive summer for everyone on the jobsite! 🦺👷♂️👷♀️ #ConstructionSafety #InternTraining #WorkplaceSafety #ConstructionIndustry #risksynergy #tooherferraris Tooher-Ferraris Insurance GroupHBRA of Fairfield County Inc.Construction Institute Rebecca St. GermainEric P.
