I am on my day 2 of the 15days content challenge by Hertechtrail. I missed my posting yesterday because of some network issues but that won't stop me from continuing the challenge. Today I am going to talk on the key responsibilities of a Product Manager: Key responsibilities of a product manager 1. Defining the product vision, strategy and road map: the product vision is a clear inspiring statement that defines how you want your product to be, the ultimate goal/impact you want your product to have. Whereas the Product Strategy is roadmap you will follow to reach your desired goal which involves making decisions on who your target users are, the features your product should have, how you position and sustains it in the market. Then Product map is the step by step map for the achievement of your product goal. 2. understanding and representating user needs: the Product manager acts as users/customers advocate, articulating their needs and putting it into consideration. 3. Monitoring the market and developing competitive analysis. Every product gets competition(s). It is the duties of a product manager to monitor the market, make research and find out how to beat their competitors and make their product better. 4. Prioritize product features and capabilities: it is important to prioritize product features and capabilities for an effective product management. Here, it is important to identify features that directly address user needs or concerns. prioritize those with the highest impact on users satisfaction. Always consider features that align with overall business goals. Assess the technical complexity and feasibility when implementing each feature. 5.create a shared brain across larger teams to empower independent decisions making: you have to be able to work closely with engineering, sales, marketing and support teams to ensure that the business and customer satisfaction goals are met. Make time - Jake knapp and John Zeratsky Activating the ‘back to school’ mode, and preparing September with Make time - How to focus on what matters every day, the book from Jake Knapp & John Zeratsky. I am taking a step back from Product management books, but… one can say that it is still kind of related 😉 I have many interests in my life, which can make it difficult for me to focus on ‘what truly matters’. Take that, and put it in a world where distractions are everywhere, and you get… frustration (a lot), and wasted time, and energy. Hence, my decision to make this book a priority during the summer 😊 Jake & John's suggestion is to go through the following steps: Highlights - Laser - Energise - Reflect ▶ Highlights Highlight is about asking yourself the following question: what will bring you the most value today? It can be something that brings you joy, or satisfaction, or a task that is urgent. ▶ Laser Laser is about removing everything that might distract you from doing your highlight. Among the numerous tips that I found in this book, the most efficient was to make all my ‘scrolling applications’ out of reach on my phone, and schedule email time. ▶ Energise  Energise is about optimizing your energy throughout the day. Reading this book, I have learnt that it is possible to optimize my caffeine intakes, in order to make the most out of it. Another tip that I liked, is that 10 minutes of intense activity might be enough to get energised (no need to run a marathon). ▶ Reflect   We are all different: to find the process that works for you, you need to experiment, observe, reflect, and iterate. My goal was to slowdown, understand what truly matters to me, make a decision on what I wanted to focus, and make time for it. Reading the book gave me practical insights on how to do it, I would highly recommend it if you are in the same situation. I will end on that quote, which I think is very inspiring, and also very accurate in our busy days: “You create your own reality by choosing what you pay attention to”. For the past three months, I've been diving into discussions about product management on LinkedIn. I've read lots of insightful posts by experts in the field (especially enjoying what Teresa Torres, Paweł Huryn 🇺🇦, and Lenny Rachitsky share – I'll save the longer list of my favorite product people for another post). Despite all that greatness, the number of points of view can be overwhelming. So, what's the most crucial part of a product manager's job? Talking to customers? Choosing the right metrics? Letting people solve problems? Navigating the business model and everything connected to it? Crafting a go-to-market strategy? Being T-shaped? Here's my take (making it even more overwhelming, I guess, but such is life). Regardless of your position – whether you're a newbie product manager, a seasoned one, a Chief Product Officer, or a product management coach – the most vital part of the job, in my view, is staying the most informed person in the room. Not necessarily the most skillful – chances are, you'll have a highly competent team, and that's the best thing to wish for. Not necessarily the most talkative – talking more doesn't equate to knowing more. The key is being the most informed. To me, it's ground zero in the extensive list of a product manager's tasks. Stay informed about your product: how it works and why. Also, how it's made. Stay informed about your customers and markets: what's happening, the numbers, those peculiar nuances that only apply to a specific market, and why. Stay informed about your team: what they do, what they know, and where they've learned it. Understand their individual and collective capabilities. Understand the synergy between them. Stay informed about your stakeholders and business development people: what's their pain, their routine, and what do they genuinely want. Stay in context of pretty much everything - and by staying in context, I don't mean diving deep into details. Collect as much high-level information as possible, have a true bird's eye view, but don't burn yourself out. You can dive deeper later. The best part? You'll likely enjoy being the most informed person in the room. It might even become your favorite aspect of the job, making your role much so much easier. What do you think?
